Replace Thermostat?
I am planning on changing my coolant soon and wanted to know if I should also replace my thermostat. I have an '09 with 64K miles. The car has never overheated and nothing has indicated that the thermostat is compromised. I had an oil change done at the dealer and they commented that the thermostat seal needed to be changed. RockAuto has the seal and an AISIN thermostat with housing for under $25 and since I will be replacing the coolant (and upper and lower radiator hoses), I figured I would just replace the thermostat and housing with a new one while replacing that seal.
Is this just a waste of money, or is there some logic to replacing this cheap part while it's easily accessible? |

No, you should leave it alone. If a thermostat breaks, it will be stuck partially open. In the winter time the car won't get warm. If you had 150k on it, then yes. At your mileage, no.

Thermostats are pretty reliable nowadays and, as per Spooler, they usually break in a safe way. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

For as old as your car is I would tell you to do it. Even if it has the extended drain Nissan blue coolant. Just do a drain and fill. You will need to burp the system afterwards just in case you get air trapped somewhere.
