You need a dial indicator to measure backlash before you remove the carrier and after install. The ones that I have measure all read between .003" to .006". You should also do a pattern check on the gears before and after install. When you remove the shims. Use a mike to measure the thickness. If they are the same thickness, then it doesn't matter what side they go back in. If they are different thicknesses. Install them back in the same side they was in. Then measure your backlash. If it's too tight or too loose. Switch the shims side to side and remeasure. If the backlash is still not in spec, then you need different shims.

When installing and torquing the bolts for the ring gear bolts. The lock-tite goes on the threads. The lube goes under the bolt head flange, not on the threads. It's confusing the way the manual has it described.
