Default Quiafe lsd for 7AT, whine?

I have had the quaife diff on my 7AT TT for some time now. It has always exhibited some whining since day 1, but I never looked into because I was told it is normal.

Now someone else here has told me Quaife should not whine at all when installed properly.

So my question is, does anyone else here have a Quaife LSD and does yours whine? Should I take ot back to the shop and get them to install it properly?

Did you upgrade diff bushes at the same time ?

That could be increased NVH that you are hearing.

I had a Quaife in my 3.7:1 diff that was quiet, but since installing 3.9:1 gears repalcing the OEM buses it is noticeably noisy but has covered 12k klics and not getting any worse, so I just turn the stereo up a bit.

The KAZZ in my 4.08:1 diff with the same bushes is less noisy.

So, it could be increased NVH from the bushes if they have been replaced, or it could be diff shims on pinion or crown-wheel which is up to the shop that installed the diff to correct if it is bad enough.

They are supposed to whine a bit.

Yes I had whiteline bushes installed at the same time.

Strange, another guy with the quaife said his does not whine and is not suppose to.

He told me his mechanic installed it and it did whine, but then got him to remove and re-install it properly and it does not whine anymore.

Depends on how loud it is. A properly shimmed CWP with a "good pattern" won't whine, so one that is noisy is not 100%. The EOM bushes are fluid filled (and are devils spawn) to damp out natural vibrations ........ change to hard bushes to will increase NVH.

Challenge is to establish whether you are hearing NVH or gear whine because the CWP is not meshing perfectly.

If you want to spend the coin, get it set up again.

If it is not getting worse, turn the stereo up a bit ..........

Your call

Mine doesn’t whine any, installed in an Auto with 3.357 gears.
Was plug & play, backlash checked the same.

Remove oil drain plug & collect small sample, then hold your finger over it.
Have someone with you to inspect magnetic & wipe it off good.
You don’t want to be filing gears.
I used the Motul Competition 75/140 in mine.

Mine whines a little on decel. Also a 7AT. Most noticeably from 50-40mph. Nothing too intrusive.

Question

Shadow. Does it whine on coast, on the gas, or all the time?

Seeing how the Quaife differential is a Torsen type (gear driven) differential it should not make noise and is one of the quiet aftermarket differentials you could possibly choice. Something obviously is not right when exactly is your Quaife differential making noise? What differential fluid are you using? Engagement with this differential is not harsh and technically requires no break in period.

The unit it's self makes no noises unless it's broke. The whine is from the ring and pinion. Either too tight or too loosen. Have to check backlash and toe pattern.

Not properly setting pinion depth will contribute to noise aside from a improper backlash setting.

That's where you do a pattern check. That will show you where the pinion is sitting at on the ring gear. I've done my share of doing gear sets.

I’ve been installing all my ring and pinion/differentials enough to know Captain Picard palmface your our self. Clearly the OP installation was screwed up. If the OP can not correct this himself then he should have a shop fix this for him.
