Experiences with IPT for their full RE7R01A 7AT rebuild
-Customer's/User's product review- The following summarizes the chronology of that IPT has failed fixing my RE7R01A 7AT transmission.
I first contacted Import Performance Transmissions (IPT) on July 27 and explained the problem. John, who I believe is the owner of IPT, said “shouldn't be a problem for them to repair during a build”. On August 7, we sent IPT my transmission. On September 4, we heard from IPT that “our transmission is completed”. On September 15, my friend paid IPT US$5439 in full for me. On October 1, I received my transmission. It was reinstalled, but the problem had not been fixed at all (The same error code reappeared. The transmission was locked and upshifting was limited.). On October 16, I contacted John to ask why the problem had not been fixed. Needing my car for work, I got tired of waiting for John to get back to me, so I asked a local mechanic to perform diagnostics. On October 17, my mechanic said the problem is potentially with the Valve Body with which the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is integrated, which IPT had not replaced or fixed. I informed John of the results. Then John accused us of "tampering" with the transmission. John asked me to provide all the information on my vehicle and I did. On October 18, John told me “As soon as I get the right thing I’ll only need about a day to modify it”, which he eventually didn’t provide anything. He also emphasized on telling me “The valve body/output speed sensor issue shouldn't be a problem for us to repair during a build" on the same day. On October 22, I informed my friend who paid IPT for me of that the replacement of the TCM didn’t fix entirely the transmission. On October 30, we received reply from IPT, accusing us of "tampering with the transmission without John’s authorization", with IPT refusing to accept responsibility for their failure to properly repair the transmission and insisting that the problem was somehow my fault. On November 1, I picked up my car for test drive and paid my mechanic US$630 to solely replace the TCM (the invoice, along with the evidence, was sent to IPT on November 2) as John asked me to find a local shop to swap the TCMs. John offered to refund me only US$600, essentially to make me go away, which he didn't refund anything eventually. I told John from IPT that there was transmission jerking (hard downshifting) after we fixed our tcm locally, and his reply is " Typically, a little of that is normal/expected when pressure is elevated (to an extent at least it effects all of the shifts). We raise it mechanically, I suggest getting it to baseline by leaving it standard in the tune (in other words, get stock transmission values and then evaluate it)". My tuner set the transmission line pressure as the factory default setting according to his prescribed course of action. I reported on that the transmission was still not working properly after we did exactly what John asked for to IPT. On November 14, the transmission rebuilt by IPT was broken while I was driving my car on freeway. It barely lasted three weeks (less than 200km on road). I sent John a DM on the same day which it was broken and haven't received a single word from IPT to this day . This is a simple case. I let IPT know the problems of my transmission before we sent it to them. IPT said they would. It came back, not fixed. They're trying to put the blame on me. Up to now, I’ve been out over $8504 USD for a dead transmission of the so-called performance rebuild. At this point, communications have completely broken down. John from IPT actually didn't do anything physically to fix my transmission during the time I were cleaning up the mess they lefted. Take the tcm as example, John may let you believe he will refund something, but IPT did nothing even after I sent him the invoice. The invoice contains all the items and prices in English, with other noted parts in Chinese. He simply said he can't comprehend that, and my efforts are gone. That invoice wasn't made for foreign business essentially. It's a local shop and I have no right to translate and rewrite it on their behalf. Tbh, I won't send the transmission to IPT anymore unless they actually refund me to cover at least the shipping both ways (costs about 2700usd including import/export tax) as well as the residual value of the broken transmission. In short, I no longer trust the service provided by IPT. I think I've been tolerant and patient enough since I received my transmission. Please be careful of going this route. Don't trust those so-called performance rebuilds easily unless your living in the States as well as willing to undergo back-and-forth troubleshooting, basically throwing money away. Similar cases can be found here. https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/sho...1418958&page=4 Tbh, what I felt tired of dealing with IPT is that he may know I'm not going to hire a lawyer over $6000. He's also prepared to defend himself online against criticism (see https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg/...smissions.html). He also doesn't seem to mind a bad review on Yelp (see https://www.yelp.com/biz/ipt-perform...thorne?osq=ipt). Finally, I'm 8,000 miles away and not really in a position to hurt his business smfh. I'm stunned. IPT hasn't even said a word after I sent him the video clip of the broken transmission (my transmission was just revving freely in D). From my experiences, I don't imagine someone who went through these like me is going to get anywhere with IPT. I couldn't even use my R gear. This breaks my heart. Add my IG (minized123456) and PM me if you want to see the video clips of the failed transmission.

Sorry to hear this..
Automatic transmissions are not simple devices. Without a transmission dyno, successful rebuilds are a crap shoot. Too bad they wont honor their (lack of) workmanship. |
