Default 7AT problem?

Earlier today while waiting in a drive thru, I took my car out of park and while running through reverse and neutral my car made the loudest clunk I've ever heard from her. No idea as to what it can be. Help?

Since last night no, as soon as it happened I threw her back in park and ran through reverse and neutral to drive again and it made the clunk again as soon as it went through reverse. Kept it in drive and just took her home. Hasn't done it since though. Somebody told me it is just the stress from the drive train to the trans and sometimes it just pops into gear.

Could be a LOT of things - worn/damaged suspension parts, worn/damaged drivetrain mounts, transmission/TCM problem, brakes, u-joints, ...

If you can ever re-create the problem, have someone outside the car listen for where the sound is coming from.

Doesn’t take much of a grade to make a snap noise; as first gear has nearly a 5:1 ratio
You also have a base w/open diff...so probably more play in the diff vs. a vlsd or aftermarket traction device.

I used to have a 7AT and traded for a 6MT, so I can speak from experience.

When you heard this clunk, did you take your foot off the brake at all when putting back into drive? In other words, did you push the brake, put into park, and then put back into drive while never releasing the brake pedal? My 7AT did this, but no idea why. If the above symptoms matches that of yours, always release the brake pedal in between shifting the tranny.

Also, there will be times when you hear the clunk when downshifting manually.

The more I think about it the more I’d bet the house that you had some kind of “strain” on the drivetrain. The fact that it hasn’t done it again pretty much confirms it.

I’m thinking you were coasting a bit when you put it in park.

what I always do now is put the trans in neutral first for a sec. then parking brake then park.
Had the same thing happen a couple of times, this solved that issue
