Default Weaker clutch helper spring install

So, my clutch always had a lack of a sort of "feel" to it, which sometimes made me feel like I just learned to drive a manual last week.

I've learned that the purpose of the "clutch helper spring" is to make the pedal feel more linear, at the cost of feeling the actual clutch engagement itself.

I've bought the item linked below, install was very easy (there are some youtube videos about it, but really it's just pulling off a clip with needle-nose pliers, removing the pin that holds the original spring, and replacing with the new spring).

Made a big difference, especially when driving hard. Much more natural feeling and predictable now. Pedal weight wasn't significantly changed.

Note you can also just remove the original helper spring, but the pedal will feel heavier and there will be more play at the top.

All in all this, combined with the CMAK install, has greatly improved the feel of my clutch. If you've followed my other post, I still need to deal with throw-out bearing gremlins, possibly caused by misalignment by my mechanic. However clutch is feeling good.

I bought my spring off of a member here on the forum. It's been in the Z since 2012.

I have driven/owned manual cars all my life and I have no problem pulling away from stationary in my 370Z so why would a helper spring benefit me?

IMHO I believe I can percieve where the bite point is intuitively hence no stall or unnecessary slipping of the clutch.

I have this particular spring also. Its made the clutch pedal feel more enjoyable for me. I didn't have a problem before on the stock spring, but this has been an upgrade for me. I know its probably more of an opinion thing.

@StormWhite

Of course you can tell where the bite point is stock, I just think this makes it a lot easier and more natural feeling. To each his own...

Love my clutch feel now with the spring upgrade. Got mine off EBay. I think all Z’s should’ve came stock with the weaker helper spring. Don’t know what Nissan we’re thinking putting in a 300lbs spring.

I am not disputing the weaker spring is better, but just to understand the reason.

So with the oem heavier spring, the clutch pedal is lighter to press down because the spring would decompress in the process which would make the pedal easier to go down.

And the spring would compress during the release of the clutch pedal. Being a heavier spring, the pedal would be released slower than the lighter spring.

I imagine the slower release action with the oem heavier spring would be more manageable?

RJM clutch pedal is a better alternative

But the helper spring is definitely an improvement over stock.
Rusty and wideglideleon like this.

There have been a couple of small threads on this spring. But here is the big thread on it.

Clutch pedal too soft/no feel? Remove the helper spring!
