Default 200k expected engine life?

https://www.engine-specs.net/nissan/vq37vhr.html

Go to the "Problems and Malfunctions" section, just above "Maintenance Data"

"The engine has three timing chains, their service life is about 150,000 miles of mileage (200,000-250,000 km). The valve clearance needs to be adjusted every 60,000 miles of mileage (90,000 km). The Nissan VQ37VHR motor life expectancy is 200,000 miles of mileage (300,000 km) or more."

I came across this when I was searching on high mileage VQ37VHR engines (trying to see how many anyone has racked up). Has anyone heard this number before?

Interesting read. I found something surprising and i wonder if there is any truth to it?

"High oil consumption. The VQ37VHR has a catalytic converters and they are very sensitive to the fuel quality. They produce a ceramic dust, which damaging the cylinders sleeve and piston rings. As the result, the engine has low compression, high fuel and oil consumption. Such engine requires repair or replacement.
To prevent this problem, you need to change the upper catalytic converters for high flow catalytic converter. It will decrease ecological standard, but this problem will not happen."

How is it possible that ceramic dust from the cats that are downstream will go back into the cylinders and cause ware?

Going by what I have read over the years, there can be a reverse flow pulse (IIRC, when the exhaust valve closes and the gasses cool quickly) - so it may be possible that the dust slowly migrates upstream.

But, yeah, it does sound a bit far-fetched to me, too. The outgoing pulse is a LOT bigger. Plus I read that a long time ago and my memory ain't what it used to be.

I've seen a lot of weird things in my life, this may be another one.

Adjust valve clearance every 60K?

Problems after 200,000 Miles

Here's his Blackstone oil analysis after 400,000 km:

The highlights...

"CHRIS: Mostly this is a good first sample from your 370Z. Considering it has nearly 400,000 km under its
belt, it makes a relatively small amount of metal. The balance of the metals is good, so we're seeing no
problems there (averages are based on a 8,300-km oil change). The only thing out of line in the spectral
exam is silicon, so check the air filtration system in case silicon is from dirt. lt could also be a harmless
sealer. The viscosity is mildly thick; that could be from heat on the oil, or maybe an additive was used that
thickened it up. lnsolubles look good. Overall, nice enqine!"

Don't be so hasty. Exhaust scavenging is a thing, and R32 GTRs are known for sucking failed-turbo-ceramic-turbine dust back up the exhaust header and into the cylinder - leading to low compression and necessitating an engine rebuild - if either of the turbos lets go.

Granted in that situation you have another turbo adding to exhaust backpressure which (with 1 turbo failed) can do weird things. But never say never and call people idiots. Just give your POV from a logical perspective and call it a day.

There is a reverse pulse in the exhaust when the exhaust valve closes. They make headers with a anti-reversion cones. The cones are located near the exhaust port. 2 stroke engines with expansion chambers like on a dirt bike take advantage of this pulse to increase power.

Cats disintegrating and eating the engine? I thought Nissan was done with that on the QR25? My old Sunburst Spec-V had the issue, as well as MANY rental car fleet Altimas with the same engine.

I've always felt most issues regarding engine wear are user related, so I am doing my best to treat my lady right!

I'm at 302K in the G37. About to do 300K mile service, so I can tell you what plugs look like shortly. At 200K just a small sign of oil burning, I'm at about 7,000 miles on this oil change so I'll probably try to see how much is burning.

What I've seen with these cars, is take care of them and they last. The ones I've seen have issues, once they where opened up there was a good bit of sludge. At this point I don't plan on really doing anything besides standard maintenance and we will see how long it last. My goal was 300-400K miles for the car so everything now is just bonus.

My 2009 Nissan 370Z 6MT had 312K miles on it when I traded it in and I am not easy on my vehicles by any means. It shows that overall the VQ37HR engine is a reliable engine. When I traded in it still ran like a champ. Having talked to a Nissan engineer before his advice was these vehicles are indeed sensitive to what fuel you use as Nissan highly recommends only using high quality top tier gasoline. The issue with the Genuine Nissan OEM catalytic converters can be solved by installing high flow catalytic converters an easy fix for a Z enthusiast. Doing all your general maintenance on time is critical to our VQ37HR. When every 100K came along changing the timing chains they showed very minimal wear. Besides having the valve timing checked every 100K miles. The only major component that was actually changed was the water pump twice for preventative maintenance. From what I was told after your proper engine break in using the Nissan “ester” motor oil changing your oil change interval using a quality API certified synthetic motor oil can help increase engine life. It is up to the consumer what to decide what motor oil will best benefit their VQ37HR engine.

Valve clearance at 60k? Have not heard anyone doing this and it is not a simple procedure like Honda. I’m doubtful that can be right.
