Default Z1 CSC Elimination failure

Hello everyone, I kind of lurk around these forums for most of my answers on my Z. Last night I had an issue I am not 100% sure what happened. I was driving home in traffic from work, I was stopped, I was pushing down the clutch pedal to put it in first, suddenly the clutch pedal hit the floor, it did not stick to the floor and would freely move back and forth with no pressure behind it. I have the Z1 CSC Elim kit, and understand how its supposed to work. I looked at the master cylinder and clutch pedal just to make sure nothing odd was going on there and it all looks fine. Checked the reservoir and it was only slightly lower than usual.

So here is where I need everyone's input. I think the the rod connecting the the slave cylinder broke loose or sheered off a bolt that connected to the fork in the bell housing.

There is no fluid leaks that I could see, car is lowered and I was not able to look under it to well, but I retraced my movement and did not see any.

Clutch pedal is not stuck to the floor, and you cannot pump it to regain pressure.

You can still turn off the ignition, and put it in any gear without using the clutch without issue.

There was a slight binding in the clutch pedal leading up to this for a few months. The pedal would feel like it kind of grinding on something as it goes through the motions, which is what really bothers me because my dumb *** could have probably prevented this if I inspected this component during my oil changes.

What do you think it is?

The answer that you are probably not wanting to hear (but your last sentence alludes to you knowing) is that you will more than likely need to drop the transmission to find the problem.

First thing I'd check is the clutch master cylinder. Only because it's much cheaper and easier than dropping the transmission. Plus, I've had my CMC fail exactly like your describing. Put a new one in, bled the system, and it was fixed. That was with the Z1 CSC kit installed, too.

Ill make sure we check that, I have someone looking at it right now, a good friend in the family. Thank you for your input!

Just got a call, its the linkage that connects to the fork from the csc, it broke right there.

Please if you can, replace it with another kit, your only going to have more problems with the Z1 kit. I've, and others, have had many problems with it. From bent linkages, failed seals, and constant adjustments.

with so many different types of failure, sounds like it is worse than the oem csc..

I have the Z1 kit and I have definitely had problems with it. But it is far better than the OEM part. Purely for the simple fact that not having to drop the transmission is a lifesaver. Adjustments and even parts replacements (for the most part) are quite simple and easily completed while the oil drains during an oil change. So while I was on my 3rd cylinder after barely 2 years, it was much better than having to drop the transmission or pay the labor cost to drop if the OEM failed catastrophically.

I plan to get the ZSpeed CMAK as soon as I need a new clutch. Unfortunately, the clutch is still in good shape with 100K miles and the Z is no longer my daily driver. I'm thinking some clutch dumps might help speed that up

Just get the ZSpeed HD CSC and be done with it. Replace the flawed part, don't re-engineer the whole design.

Just my opinion.

Nissan had an issue with the internal slaves in the 350Z. They re-engineered the part as an external slave and put it on the last couple of model years. The 370Z aftermarket slaves are mostly based off that design IINM.

The only reason I prefer the external slave is I like the idea of not having to drop the transmission if something happens down the road. Of course, even with the external slave, something could happen. But with the internal slave, you know you're going to be dropping the transmission even if it's just to inspect the part.

Honestly z1 csc elim kit is not bad. My problem was the U-bracket that connected the linkage to the slave cylinder and to the fork failed. It had a stud that came out of the back and bolted into the fork. That stud broke off. My solution was to drill out the stud, and replace it with a high grade bolt, and lockwasher. I will however look at the zspeed kits.
