Differential Shims?

So I searched and I only found a DIY for a 350z differential upgrade. Ours are the same but they never mentioned the use of any shims at all. I want to make sure I have everything I need for the upgrade to a Quaife (QDF13L) from the VLSD, right now I believe have everything but shims. Are these needed, nice to have, or not useful for the install?

I did go through the entire Diff thread and shims were only mentioned once and that just said "call Z1 and find out". Which I did and the guy I was talking too must not have understood what I was asking for because he only sent me the side bearing and seal kit when I wanted the full kit that also replaced the pinion gear bearings. So I ordered the left out parts listed in the diff thread but I am worried I may need shims still.
