Transmission Shifting Feel
So I bought my beautiful 370z used and it's been amazing except for one weird thing. When my car is cold, the shifts are like butter. Yet when it gets warmed up, the shifts are clunky and hard and sound just bad. I was wondering if my car used to be in the cold so there was super viscous transmission fluid in it, that's why in the California climate (heat) it's too viscous and the shifts start to become clunky. When I haven't used it all day, then start to drive at night the shifts are glorious
Is it just me, or could the transmission fluid being to viscous be why the shifts become clunky and loud when it's all warmed up? Thank you guys! |

Like ZBrah and ayrton88, every MT I've had was stiffer when cold. Get someone that knows a bit about MTs, have them take it for a test drive, and see what they think.
My guess is that you need to change the lube (as per barncobob above) or the synchros are worn. Unless you know the lube has been changed recently, I'd go ahead and change it. You should be able to DIY the lube change - several threads on this site.

Honestly, with a used 2009 you might be better off changing all the fluids. Maybe even plugs. That way you know that they've all been done and when. You never know what kind of care the previous owner took or didn't take.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Yeah at the back of my mind I was thinking it was the synchros but I don't have the money to drop on a transmission rebuild at the moment. I'm gonna try new transmission fluid and see how it feels from there.
