Default Diff Oil Observation

Hey guys,

I've seen a lot of posts about how nasty and bad diff oil is just after a few thousand miles. Thought I would chime in with mine.

Changed my Diff Oil over the weekend and it was only a medium/dark amber color. This is with 30K miles on it. I wonder why others have had such "horrifying" oil pouring out of their diff with maybe 1/2 of the miles that were used with my oil.

just my 2 cents...

I drove mine like I stole it for one autoX season, ( 5 months) and it was filthy. This was also after I changed out my LSD for a Quaife. It is a helical unit so it could have been from that and the fact that the gear lash of the ring gear was reset from the install.

How do you drive?

I agree with MB above in that it really depends on how hard you drive. What did the drain plug look like? It can be a good indicator of how filthy the fluid is. The stock one is magnetic, and mine often has a nasty film of metallic shavings when I change the fluid. I don't track, but mine is often pretty nasty after 15K miles. That's to be expected though. I like driving harder than the stock VLSD can handle

I drive it pretty hard. The plug had a decent amount of gunk on it. I've done a few track days here and there but will be getting more into tracking now that my mods are done. I guess i'll compare my latest results to my next change now that there are way more track days on the fluid. Track day this Sunday, 1/17/16....PUMPED!

Sweet!

I wonder if some people just say it is super filthy simply because of the nasty smell. My diff oil at 15K miles certainly isn't black like the engine oil usually is. It just reeks to high heaven.
