Quick oil plug question
I bought a magnetic oil plug and it has a washer on it. I see the factory plug does not. Do I need to use this washer or simply just the crush washer like the factory?

The logical side of my brain says not to use it because then I'm stealing between the oil pan and the washer and not the oil pan and the bolt. But then the other side of my brain says I'm overanalyzing this, which I often tend to do.

I had the same question when I first purchased my magnetic drain plug a couple of years ago. Given that there was a fairly large gap between the threaded portion of the plug and the head of the plug, I elected to use both washers … with the solid washer placed on the plug first, followed by the copper crush washer. Never had an issue with leakage provided I snug down the plug. Trust this helps.

I ultimately didn't use the washer and just used the crush washer. It seems to be fine.

Use either washer but not both. Both will make a seal. The mating surface on the oil pan is quite flat and there isn't a problem making a leak proof seal. When I owned my Z's I never used a crush washer - just a plain washer and I never, ever had a leak. Don't overthink this. It's a simple mechanical seal.
