DIY: Sport Spoiler Removal
Figured I'd make a thread since a lot of people break theirs removing it.
Step 1: Remove plastic cover in hatch. (Steps 1-6 in link below) DIY: Weight reduction/Fix hatch not opening issue Step 2: Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts holding the spoiler in. They are in the same hole and same horizontal plane, one is facing forward and the other back. Forward Back Step 3: Use fishing line to cut the end of the double sided tape. Slide it under and start moving it back and forth. You may need to use something to prop the spoiler up a fraction of an inch as you get closer to the inside. You only need to cut it this way a little past where the spoiler base dips in. Cut both sides. Step 4:Pry up one of the ends with something (I used a couple of these Amazon.com : Pedro's Bicycle Tire Lever (Pair) : Bike Hand Tools : Sports & Outdoors) and use a knife or utility blade to start working toward the middle cutting the double sided tape. Don't lift very much, just enough to cut the tape and move on. You can start popping the clips out as you move across, but don't lift it any more than a hand width up until all the clips are popped and tape cut. Step 5: Once all the tape is cut, start working the spoiler straight up from the body. I started at one end and slid my hand under and worked it across to pop the remaining clips after step 4. Picture of the Clips There are 2 different clips on the ends. Notice the tape pattern you will need to cut. Step 6: Clean it up and move on with your life. I got mine of without breaking it and honestly thought setup number 6, cleanup, was the toughest pat. Go easy on the adhesive remover. I did not read the fine print, it is harmful to plastic and I managed to fog up one of my rear taillights a bit.

If you want to remove the spoiler entirely, it may be easier to find someone with the same color hatch in a base model and trade them your hatch with spoiler for their hatch w/o spoiler. Nice DIY, OP. I think that most people who break it during removal just get impatient or don't use the fishing line method. That tape is strong stuff.

The tape is tough stuff and you definitely need to cut it with fishing line then a blade of some type. I can see where people see it starting to separate and think they can just muscle it off, but the tension will build and break it once you get toward the middle. |

Thanks for this! I removed the oem spoiler over the weekend using this guide.
Stupid me, I was cutting with a blade, and I scratched up the trunk quite a bit haha so be careful! It'll be covered by my duckbill, or the sport spoiler if I were to replace it in the future, so not a big deal, but figured I'd mention it here (I thought I had the blade angled enough to not touch the trunk, but clearly I didn't). I got two scratches deep enough it went through to the metal, so I'll be applying touch up paint before installing the new spoiler. And removing the original double-sided tape is tough! I'm using a mix of goo-gone, heat gun, rubbing with my fingers, and repeat! I'm about 80% done, all the large pieces have been removed, just need to work out the fine lines remaining. I've parked my car in the sun today (normally it's hiding in the garage), so it should be much easier to take out when I get home. |

A heat gun is your friend.
