Default DIY: NST Short Shifter Install [PICTURE HEAVY]

So this may be similar to other DIYs however each kit is different so i thought i would post this here to assist anyone if needed.

I already had an AMS shifter installed so the removal is of that to put in the NST.

You will need:
1 x set of 3/8 drive Metric sockets
1 x 3/8 drive ratchet
1 x 3/8 drive swivel or universal joint
1 x set of metric allen keys.
1 x NST Short Shifter Kit
Instal took me 1 hour.

(you could also use a 1/4 drive ratchet and tools but its up to you)

To start:

o Remove Shift Knob and raise top panel. Then disconnect the connector for your hazard light and rev match if you have it.

o Remove all 4 bolts that hold down the grey retaining plate.

o Remove grey retaining plate and disconnect both connectors on the right side.

o Remove upper rubber boot.

o Remove lower rubber boot from around shifter retaining plate and shifter.

o Now going under the car. Remove the rubber boot from around the shifter linkage. This is right above the driveshaft which you can see in the bottom part of the picture. The boot just pulls away towards the transmission.

o Remove the bolt and washers from the lower rod end. Also remove the sleeve bushing from the rod end.

o Back up top. Remove 3 bolts that hold down the stock retaining plate. (NOTE: The shifter has a spring under it and will pop up as you remove the bolts.)

o Remove stock retaining plate.

o Remove shifter, Leaving spring in place.

Continued in Post 2.
NonStopTuning and wsarver like this.

This is a quick side by side of the NST shifter on the right with the AMS on the left.

o Install NST Shifter through spring and keeping the pin above the bearing on the right side.

o Install NST Retaining Plate

o Install the 3 bolts and 3 washers through the retaining plate. I put a little bit of thread locker 222 purple on the threads to ensure they stay put but this is not required.

o Going back under the car slide the sleeve bushing provided with the kit into the rod end, ensuring that both plastic hats are in place on the openings. Connect the rod end with bushing and hats in it to the shifter linkage and reinstall the bolt. Again i put a bit of the 222 purple thread locker on the threads. Once thats done pull the rubber boot back into place.

o Reinstall lower rubber boot making sure to get it seated low around the shifter.

o Reinstall the upper rubber boot.

o Reinstall grey upper retaining plate and re-attach the two connectors on the right side.

o Reconnect connectors to upper cover and slide cover back into place.

o Install shift knob of choice...mine is this nice NST red one. (they come with stickers to put on top but i like it without)

Ok I figured out some steps this diy is missing. The shifter cup where the spring sits and the pivot ball need to be greased a lot with white lithium grease. Also, the stock shifter plate needs to be installed over the red plate And when you install the stock shifter plate over the red one and adjust it correctly, you won't over shoot 5th and 6th. It's what I had to do on my G37. It shifts beautifully.
