Defi Oil Pressure Gauge - Need Advice
Finished installing a Defi oil pressure gauge (52 mm metric Racer version) yesterday. Connected the gauge harness per the instructions provided by Defi ... except had no success with the "illumination" wire. (Evidently connecting this wire will result in the gauge dimming at night when the headlights are turned on). After consulting the FSM, tried tapping into the white "illumination (-)" wire that runs from the M81 connector (main harness) that plugs into the Bose radio. The radio display dims when the headlights are turned on ... and I confirmed that the white wire controls the dimming (i.e., the dimming feature on the radio display did not work after cutting the wire). After connecting the gauge wire and the white wire (using a butt-end connector with a solder insert), the dimming feature on the radio was restored, but the gauge did not dim when the headlights were turned on. In other words, a complete waste of time that involved removing all of the trim pieces and the audio unit in order to get to the M81 connector. So I'm now left with a gauge that works (... actually looks and works great), but without the dimming feature. Has anyone who has installed a Defi gauge managed to identify what wire to tap into in order for the dimming feature to work? I know that one member tapped into a wire marked "illumination" that ran off an aftermarket HU with success, but that doesn't apply in my case. Any help would be much appreciated. Incidentally, I'm in a 2013 Touring Sport with the Bose audio system, but without the nav unit. Also, I need to do a reset on the passenger-side airbag after disconnecting it to remove the audio unit ... but I think that someone has posted instructions on how to do the reset.

I actually found the solution after another attempt. Same procedure, but instead of tapping into the white wire marked "ILL (-)" that connects to the Bose audio unit through connector M81, you need to tap into the red wire marked "ILL (+)". Works perfect. The Defi gauge now dims when the lights are turned on. Trust this helps.

Actually, if you have the FSM, go to Section PG (Power Supply, Ground & Circuit Elements), and look in the "Connector Information" section. Under the "Main Harness" heading, there is wiring information for a bunch of connectors. For my vehicle (2013 with Bose, but w/o nav), I focused on the information for Connector M81 labelled "Audio Unit". It showed a red wire marked "ILL (+) (Terminal 9), which I tapped into. However, for Bose with nav, I think that the connector to focus on is M84 labelled "AV Control Unit". It shows a red wire marked "ILL+ (Terminal 79) that may be the one you are looking for. Anyway, if you search through the connector information, you should be able to identify which connector and wire to focus on. Trust this helps. P.S. It's a very tedious job, but well worth it when you first turn on the headlights and see the gauge dim. Obviously, do a test before you reassemble everything to make sure you found the right connector and wire. Good luck! |

You may be able to tap into the ILL+ wire somewhere more convenient than at the connector behind the radio. FSM should tell you how the harness with ILL+ is routed and where any fuses or other connectors may be located.

I agree with SouthArk. There are other connectors with ILL+ wires shown in the FSM. I went for the connector that plugged into the back of the radio simply because it was relatively easy to trace. If you find an alternate wire that is easier to access, post it so that other members know.
