From an old rotary buffer to

6 in. Variable Speed Dual Action Polisher
I have been using a rotary buffer for so many years, I never gave the DA a second look. I got this polisher as a gift, and decided to try it out on my Hood. I was very impressed with it, and think I may have to retire the old rotary.
I'm definitely no expert, but one reviewer says it is better than his old Porter Cable.

I have a friend who also had a good experience with that rotary from Harbor Freight

If you're running quality pads and chemicals that buffer should do the trick. I personally sprang for the Porter Cable 7424xp and have had a great experience with it.

That looks like a less expensive version of this DA. The flex has become a pretty popular item…at a price $$$.

It is actually better than the PC in terms of power and build(as of late).

It is a bit closer to Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital - Griot's Garage but the harbor vibrates like a ************.

The flex is nothing at all like any of these as it is forced rotation, not free spindles, meaning that the pad spins no matter what kind of pressure you put on it. The flex is the power of a rotary with the safety of a DA, in the hands of a pro where time is money, it is worth its weight in gold. Not to mention it has 95% less vibration than any free spindle.

IMHO, the HF is a good value, don't expect it to last too long with serious use, extended warranty is ok. The Griot's has a great warranty and comes with extra brushes. The PC, is a crap shoot, they aren't bad per say....but they are a massive company with a massive product line. I would actually recommend the griot's, then move up to a flex/rupes. Cyclos are great, just not for me..

Is poor quality from PC something new? I've Had mine for years but I don't do anything commercial with it. Maybe that's the difference.

I've got TWO PC's and have had them for years. Not only have they gotten a TON of use but they travel with me to all my detailing clinics. Never had one ounce of a problem out of them. On the other hand, I've had my made in Germany Flex repaired TWICE, and it is not as old as my PC's are.

All depends on who you talk to, everyone has a differing opinion.

If you like it and it works for your purposes so that all that matters. At this point after using my PC and trying out several products I don't really care what anyone else thinks and have used it enough that I can value my own opinion more than anyone else's.

One thing I have really learned is that the lower cost products can be just as effective as the higher end things as long as you have a good technique.

I'm merely referring to the recent crop of Chinese based PC polishers, the good ole "hecho en mexico"s are as trust as anything.

Griot's build is not much better(again overseas), but their warranty is much better.

Take Adam's for example, they will no longer carry the PC due to its outsourcing(labor practices and quality are sited) overseas. That is enough for me to follow suit.

It's all moot, once you get used to the DA, you WILL want a FLEX/RUPES to go nuts with. Best of all, a FLEX is 10x easier on your hands! But by all means, take your pick, you CANT go wrong with a quality polisher, they all are(GG/megs/PC).

Porter-Cable was founded in 1906 by R.E. Porter, G.G. Porter, and F.E. Cable, who, starting with a $2,300 investment, opened a jobbing machine and tool shop out of their garage in Syracuse, New York. In 1914, the company began to focus on power tools, starting with a line of power lathes. In 1917, the company bought a plant on North Salina Street in Syracuse.

In 1926, Chief Engineer Art Emmons invented the portable electric belt sander, called the Take-About Sander, and the company began to develop a niche in portable electric power tools. In 1929, Emmons invented the helical-drive circular saw, a compact, lightweight design that is still the most widely used circular saw design produced today.

In 1960, the company was sold to Rockwell International. Rockwell made numerous changes, including phasing out the Porter-Cable name, relocating the company's base of operations to Jackson, Tennessee, and creating a lower end of power tools to compete with Black & Decker. These tools had numerous reliability problems and harmed the brand's image. They were purchased well after the move outside of the USA.

In 1981, Pentair, Inc. acquired Rockwell's power tool group—consisting of Porter-Cable and Delta Machinery—and restored the Porter-Cable name. The company repositioned itself as a manufacturer of professional power tools and ended production of consumer-level tools. In 1989, the company introduced the first electric random orbital sander. Around this time, the company expanded into broader retail channels, including The Home Depot and Lowe's, greatly expanding its production in the process.

In 1996, the Smithsonian Institution established a collection of materials from the company's 90-year history, the first such collection for a power tool company.

In 2000, Porter-Cable consolidated with sister company Delta Machinery, the latter moving its headquarters and distribution center from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Jackson. The same year, Pentair acquired DeVilbiss Air Power Company and, in 2002, Porter-Cable expanded its line-up to include air compressors, air tools, generators, and pressure washers.

In October 2004, the Pentair Tools Group—comprising Porter-Cable, Delta Machinery, DeVilbiss Air Power, and others—was purchased by Black & Decker, now Stanley Black & Decker. Porter-Cable is headquartered in Jackson, Tennessee. Manufacturing in the United States has mostly ceased; tools are now made primarily in Mexico and China.

So the moral of the story is that the PC has been manufactured in Mexico and China for years and there has been no major fallout in the quality of the PC-7424. Not EVERYTHING coming out of China is garbage. They DO have manufacturing facilities that actually put of products that have to meet rigid quality control standards. Our USA born "big three" get a fair share of parts from China that must meet certain quality control standards and so does Nissan. So any PC's that have been bought since around 2005-2006 were already being manufactured outside the USA. I have two of them and have had no issues out of them whatsoever. I have also YET to see any proof or documentation that my PC was built on the backs of abused children, being forced to work in unsafe and unethical working conditions.
