3M Paint Defender on the Z
I've been wanted to get my front end protected from rock chips, even though I already have many minor ones, I wanted to prevent it from getting worse. After watching many reviews I ended up buying a few cans of 3M paint defender. I just completed the process a few hours ago, check it out...
1. Masking and waxing the area 2. completed, used about half a can. but i noticed lots of overspray on the left side of the hood. so have to wait till it dries, 3. yeah.... 4. close up, 5. so here it is, after about 5 hours. doesn't look as bad but you can definitely see overspray drips. 6. since i still have 2 and half cans left, i decided to try again, So its time to peel it off. 7. came off in one piece 8. 2nd attempt, came out perfect 9. 10. 11. also did side mirrors Overall, looks nice. I will leave it to dry for a few days, and wax it in a week. Ill post some pics later in the week. |

I did this to my car when I first brought her home. I posted my b process in some 3m paint defender thread. I have to say it does work. You just have to prep the area right, wax her well, then spray in a area where you don't have wind blowing. The problem is taking the 3m spay defender off after she has been in the elements. All of the sand, chips and protecting it has done beats the film up. This creates small tears and when you go to peel it off; it peels in small pieces. It's a total pain! The other ring I don't like about it is when it gets wet, it turns a nasty milky white Color. I hated how my car looked after a wash.

Sounds like what happens to plastic trim when you wax it. Are you perhaps supposed to use a different detailing procedure on areas treated with the product?
