Brake recommendations
Hey all,
I have done a bit of research on this site, and just wanted grab some opinions. I am going FI soon, and I have the base brakes. I know I will need to upgrade, and I have come to two conclusions. 1. The cheaper option, go with with the sport brakes with ss lines, better fluid, upgraded rotors and pads. 2. Go with an after market BB setup. My question for you all is will I see a huge difference going the more expensive route? Enough to justify the extra $$? I will be doing some drags and some auto x. Maybe in the future a track day or 2. But this will not be a track car. From my understanding the sports brake package is pretty decent for stock. Is this true? What would you do? And why? Thanks in advance for the advice

I wanna say no, you won't notice a huge gain going with anything better than the OEM Akebonos. Just get Z1 rotors, some brake cooling and you're set. (Tell Jon@Z1 that Andrew the ásshole sent you)

That was my plan. Upgrading from base to sport brakes with the better rotors.
Brake cooling? You talking about modifying the front bumper and piping the air over the brakes?

+1 for OEM akebonos. Great brakes if you use decent fluid and pads. Stock rotors are fine too. I've tracked my car and have no cooling ducts and did fine at CMP which is heavy on brakes.

The price difference seems rediculous to me.... like I told my friend that was giving me **** about my base brakes. I want to go faster... not slow down... lol

I have sports brake with Carbotech XP24 front and XP20 rear pads with Z1 rotors, and on track I can outbrake another 370z with Brembo GT 6pot 380mm front and 4pot 380mm rear with street pads. You'll be amazed what the sports brake can do with track pads.

I just have the XP10 pads and they are like nothing I have ever used before. Sport brakes and disks + good pads + good fluid are all you really need. Also they dust and squeal like nothing I have ever used before.

ive read good things about the project mu pads on akebono's.
anyone recommend the op project mu pads? personally ive been happy with my stock akebono pads. only thing ive done is refresh the brake fluid with regular dot3/4. |

yeah, unless you are going for looks, I don't think you need upgraded calipers. Better pads, fresh fluid.. if you aren't tracking it - really no need.
I can understand wanting to spice up the looks of the brakes though.. if you are FI. sort of like wearing beat-up sandles with a 3-piece suit... might as well go all the way.

between the base 350z brakes and the brembos that may have been true, but the akebono's are huge vs
the brembo's so im thinking there is plenty of measureable difference between base and sport brakes on the 370z? |

Upgrade the lines and fluid will help pedal feel and performance in track/auto-x but I wouldn't say either are critical upgrades to deal with more power. Can't go wrong with a better pad and rotor. I would say if you want to throw money at your brakes start with a good two piece rotor. Less rotational mass will mean better braking performance. A mildly aggressive street pad would be a good choice.
Don't forget your tires do most the work when stopping the car, so hopefully you are not going cheap in that area. |
