Default RS-R Sports-i Coilovers Review

Hey all, just want to share my experience with the RS-R Sports-i coilovers recently installed on my car. My purpose was to find something better/comfortable for DD, but at the same time have the option to be customized and tuned for the track (FYI, I’m upgrading from OEM suspension).

General consensus from what I saw was the KW V3, BC ER, or Tein Monoflex were the coilovers that would fit both of my criteria (and budget lol). Also read tons of reviews and talked with lots of track guys to see if they had any suggestions…then I found out about RS-R. They’re local to me (OC/Irvine area) and I got a chance to come in, discuss, and even drive their demo FR-S car.

The build quality on these is flawless; RS-R is all in-house, all r&d, parts, manufacturing, assembly done in their factory in Japan (hella jdm?). You also get new top mounts, so you don’t have to reuse your OEM ones like you would with some other coilovers. The dampers are 36-way adjustable; height adjust is easy with couple of jack stands and collar wrench. The dampers are monotube and they use titanium linear springs (lighter/stronger than OEM) which is preferred for performance.

Compared to the OEM…the ride quality difference is day and night. Right away, car feels much more planted and balanced, very predictable and gives great feedback. From the picture, look at the top mount, you’ll see a rubber layer over the top-mount where it connects to the chassis, this reduces coilover clunking noise with metal mounts, been over 3 weeks now and haven’t ran into any noise/chatters, or problems. Customer service is awesome, they even offered me to come in when their Japanese engineers were in town to ask any questions or need any help.

Performance wise, I did couple of canyon runs and I’m more than satisfied, feedback from the car is top-notch, handling greatly improved! I’ll update this review more to give more feedback of how it feels on the track; I’m already signed up for autox, streets of willow, and buttonwillow in June.

If you’re near the area, I’m pretty sure they’ll be happy to have you come in and discuss, test drive, etc. Big thanks to the RS-R guys (Eric, John, Ben) and Jeff @ (microimageonline.com) for all the help and install!
