What Spring Rates
Hey guys, another coilover question from me. I tried searching but didn't quite find the exact question I'm looking for. I'm down to choosing a couple coilovers and they have different spring rates and just don't really know what to pick.
I'm seeing Tein Flex Z, made in Japan, adjustable height and dampers, they have 12/10k front rear spring rates BCs have 10/8k rates. So basically I'm worried about the Tein's being way too stiff for normal driving and then the BC's have a good front rate, but the rear is actually ever so marginally softer than stock, which that concerns me What I want from a suspension kit is just a slight drop, an inch tops, but more so I want to help the cars handling with flatter cornering, increasing front end response and grip and limit the somewhat floaty feeling the car has now through faster corners on my backroads. I'd like a more predictive rear end as well, which i feel now has a lot of vertical motion and bounce. Lots of squat and dive under accel/decel. So would either be fine? Or is one preferred just off the rates alone? I don't want to break my back, but also don't want the floaty softer rates either, which is just bugging me with the BC rear rates. ANyone with the same setups or spring rate experience is most welcomed to chime in (: |

what is "tolerable" in DD is totally subjective
spring rate isn't the only factor either, since what tires you're running matters (lower profile = less comfort) you're in california - hit up your local Z group and ask for a test ride. go with what feels good to you

I have fortune auto 500's at 12/10. I'd say that's my subjective limit for the street.
For reference I drove a fully seam welded NB Miata with 12/7 rates (Tein Mono Flex coilovers) Spring rates are one thing but if you choose bullchit chinese dampers then your ride will be garbage regardless.

Have you looked in the HKS Hipermax IV GTs? These are perfect for the street and have 10k Front / 9k Rear Spring Rates. 100% made in Japan and fully adjustable. But what is great about the HKS coilovers is that they come pre-set height and dampening out of the box. HKS does research on US roads and sets their coilovers at perfect range for daily driving. These specific coilovers are set at -21mm Front and -20mm Rear. So a little less than inch drop all around. Very comfortable for the street but also performs well mountain driving, ect.
Comparing these to the Tein Flex Z and BC Racing Coilovers as far as comfort and performance are concerned will be much better, IMO. Just an option im throwing out there if you havent seen these before.
