Electric Power Steering!

Hey everyone, first time poster here. I was wondering if anyone here as messed around with the idea of electric power steering.

My soul purpose for this would be to increase reliability for high performance driving. and essentially, one less thing to worry about by removing the need for fluids via a hydraulic steering system.

I've been messing around with numbers. how much weight the motor is actually moving. I was thinking about getting the electric servo from the 2nd gen versa and adapting the steering angle sensor but I don't know if the weight of the Z would cause it to burn out faster. The entire system would be insulated from the heat of the engine and surrounding components.

Most people, for high performance driving, prefer less electronics between you and the road rather than more. And if you want to save weight you'd just do away with power steering as well as the lotus elise and exige did.

I've never driven a car with EPS that I liked the steering feel. Electric steering units can be noisy as well. Check out the insulation that most manufacturers will put around the EPS to reduce/eliminate the cabin noise.

....And you are just replacing a pump with an electric motor, so I don't really see the logic for reliability. I believe most manufacturers go with EPS for fuel economy improvements.

I would probably not ever buy a car with EPS, but that is just my opinion.

Fewer moving part leads to greater reliability.

Replacing mechanical controls with electronic controls has been more reliable since shortly after mass production of the transistor began.

Adding electronics to remove fluid that can boil and cause catastrophic damage is a bad thing. Electronics are ways to remove something that has to be maintained and is also a great way to reduce weight. That was brash. Hydraulics is just as complicated as electronics.

s2000 had eps and I LOVED it.

my GTI has electric power steering. i think it feels fake. but da good is i need to make real sharp turns in the parking garage at work so no worry going lock to lock.

The newer cars with steer by wire do it for fuel mileage. It takes the power steering pump off the motor. One less thing for the motor to spin. Pretty soon, the A/C compressor with be off the motor too. Just wait until the 48 volt wiring harness becomes common. A couple of high end cars already have it.
