Default Advice on a few coilover options? Downsides?

Hey all,
Sorry to add to this topic that is so common. Really I have a budget of $1500-$2000 just for coilovers. Looking at hks hipermax iv, tanabe sustec z40, and have a few people really standing by stance super sports..i have read up on all of these and can't find much actual advice. Is there a true downside to any? Stance I can get as a true coilover...but they are the cheapest of them all. Hks/tanabe if I have issues how much of a nightmare is it to get them rebuilt? My car is mostly a street car I'm looking to auto x 4-5 times a year with for now. I have an amuse kit on my car now and want to get rid of my tein type s springs which are quite a drop. Any advice is appreciated.

You can ask stance to custom valve to desired spring rates. I venture a guess that Stance has better US support.

I vote stance because I love mine.

Check out Tein Street Flex coils and the EDFC electronic dampening!

I run this set up on my Nismo and absolutely love it. You can adjust the dampening on the fly and set the presets to your liking. It's the ultimate daily driver and with the click of a button you can stiffen it up for the track.

I'll post the link to my build thread if you want to check mine out

Thanks for the link posted. I don't think i would be disappointed with any..just curious if anyone knows any downsides or major upsides to each...price goes up about $300 per model..stance>hks>tanabe. I have just learned that you really get what you pay for. I know these are certainly not the best, but I want something that isn't clunky and a horrible ride. In 3 weeks I'm driving 1500 miles to FL and I'm going to try and have this together by then.

Another advantage with stance is the option to opt for swifts springs. See the spring rate consistency @ links below, just couple of examples.

Swift vs. Vogtland Interesting find on coilover spring testing

Swift Springs dynoed - North American Motoring

As for dampening....cant say hks or tanabe are better than stance without dyno testing them.

Just ordered a set of Stance Pro Comp 2s (a little over price range, but they have cheaper options).
They were able to get custom Swift Spring rates, and the true coilover setup allows me to go for a simple rear toe bar vs the SPL midlink with a spring perch for adjusting toe, which saves about $500. I'll be using the eccentric lockout kit from SPL with this.

Well I guess that answers my questions on stance, I heard some issues from way back on their older models of coilovers from some local people "evo guys" and never really looked at them..things sure must be pretty solid now. I was assuming hks would be where I would be directed. True stance type with swifts run me what an hks set does. thanks for the quick responses!

Just picked up BC Racing's new DR Series coils. Single adjustable, but with better dampening curve than the BR series (which makes things like autocross and tighter corners more fun/controllable) and available swift springs. Within your budget as well.

Tbh, anything can go wrong, expensive or not. With stance, if something is wrong, you may be able to get replacement faster since the source is in U.S. Don't think any of the 3 would be a "bad" choice.

Slight diversion from your choices:

Koni Yellows

^this may be a good choice if you are into it, although option 1's springs may be too stiff for your use, you can just buy different springs....talk to seller about your needs if interested.

Or, has KW v3 or Bilstein PSS10 ever cross your mind? Although new sets are a little above your budget.

kW v3s were in my mind from the get go, and Koni yellows and springs were actually my first choice..but now with an unexpected amuse kit I am leaning towards having height adjustability. I am looking to stay around my budget simply so I can buy control arms and everything needed to get it all adjusted/aligned all at once. For some reason I always thought the tanabe z40s were what I wanted since I've seen them way back. Their really just isn't a whole lot out there about them or the hks. The car isn't my daily, but I am
trying to get into some auto x this year and finally have some fun.

^ the "Koni yellow" I referred to in the link is a custom valved setup and fully height adjustable, and is not the normal off the shelve units, FYI

If you are considering used sets, a set of KW V3s popped up for sale: KW V3 Coilovers - Central NJ

Looks like it's in need of a replacement dust cover, but also comes with the top hats already installed. Probably would've gone for that if it'd come up a week earlier and saved $1000.
