Default 370Z Brake Pads After Track

Hi all,

I tracked my stock 2013 Base 370Z last week for the first time and noticed wear on my brakes afterwards. I took it to the dealership today who said that that my rear brake pads are at 2mm and that they need replacement ASAP. They quoted around ~$300 for replacement and another $150 for rotor resurfacing. My car has 17k miles on it.

I figured that I can do the pad replacement myself but is the rotor resurfacing really necessary? I know the term "warpage" gets thrown around loosely and I asked the dealer if my rotors have warped and he said no. They said its good to resurface when changing pads. I will bleed the brake fluid when I replace these pads as well.

Also, would you guys have any recommendations for brake pads replacement from OEM? I aim to track my car twice a year. I'm leaning towards Akebono brake pads.

Thanks!!

I haven't ever resurfaced rotors, but I've never messed any up before. I always just give them a few days light use before really working them. Are you experiencing any vibration in the pedal? I would recommend a seperate set of pads for track use if you go every few months, theyre really easy to change out. Theres a set people on here really like thats a different compound front and rear, I cant recall what it is though.

Do a search. You'll find about a dozen threads on the subject, with a hundred different opinions. Myself. DD and once in awhile track use. Yellowstuff pads. You don't need to resurface the rotor. Just do a good pad bedding. For brake fluid. Hundred different opinions. Minimum, I would use Motul 600.

You don't need to resurface rotors when you change pads but some people recommend changing your rotors when you change your pad.

Personally I've always felt that a proper bedding will get rid of previous pad deposits. 4 or 5 panic stops from 80mph outta do it. Then you need to make sure you don't completely stop and rest on the brakes while the rotors are still smoking or you're likely to melt the pads to the rotor, that's typically what causes the vibration many attribute to a warped rotor.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm leaning towards getting the following:

Project Mu Brake Pads NS400 -Rear- Base Pkg. Nissan 370Z 2009-15
(from Forged Performace)

Would there be any problems if I only upgrade the rear brake pads and keep the fronts stock (they are still at 6mm, only stock rears went bad after track).

It would be best to change both front and rear pads to maintain brake balance. Stock pads and the pads you want have different friction coefficients. The Mu pads have more bite. Could up-set things.

If I still have 6mm left on OEM Fronts, should I just get those replaced as well with Mu pads? Or is that too soon and a waste of money?

I would only bother to resurface rotors if I were changing pad compound (i.e. switching from ceramic to semi-metallic or vice versa). But a proper bedding is likely plenty sufficient.

If you're tracking, you might as well get some new pads for the front.

Would you have OEM tires in the front of the car and race tires in the rear? Then you will answer your brake question with that answer also...
