Component Speakers, Sub & Amp for $500
Ever since I bought this car I have been disappointed with the sound system, to be fair it had a non functioning Pioneer when I bought it. I replaced that with a Kenwood DNX690hd, for about $500.00 from Techtronics. It was supposed to have been factory refurbished but those guys were schetchy to deal with (item not in stock, but maybe we have this one in stock, we are not sure) and the pictures of the discounted Hertz HSK on their website are pictures of fakes. The head unit is working fine and supposedly has their two year extended warranty.
I used Stinger Roadkill sound deadening through the hatch area and doors. I chose it because it was well rated and the lightest weight available. $100 on sale from Sonicelectronics. In the past few months I have already put $600 in the sound system, there will be another $500 spent replacing the Bose amp, wiring, and speakers. This is what $500 bought... I will post pics with homemade sub enclosure over the spare in the next couple days. Doing this in stages was not so much a hit for the wallet or grief from the wife. |

Here is my $500 of stuff. The amp is too big to fit behind the seat as planned,so I will have to put it above where the Bose amp is now. The behind the seat location leaves no room for the wiring. This amp, speaker sub combo gives me bridged 125 RMS each side to front stage and 250 RMS for the sub. I have the option of not bridging and adding rear fill speakers at a later time if I choose.
The Rockford Fosgate 12" sub is mounted to an insulated panel and will be in place of the stock Bose sub. The spare tire and surrounding enclosure is packed with a shipping blanket and Stinger Stealth Roadkill sound deadener to create a ported sub enclosure while retaining the spare tire. Ironically I will probably leave the spare in the garage, as I did in my RX8, to compensate for the added weight. I will post installed pics soon. |

I bought the Roadkill Stealth a month ago and the $100 it cost is not included with the $500 amount paid for the Sub, Amp, Speakers, wiring and installation materials shown above.

I made a ring around the tire with sound deadener then put a packing blanket over the tire. The sub is suspended over the tire on the insulated panel. The panel is 1/4 inch birch plywood coated in plastidip. The plan is to run the sub under the carpet and padding where it will not be visible or take away storage space. The metal grill over the sub is to protect it and give an air cushion to quell vibration sounds. I have about $70 invested in this subwoofer setup. I already had the sound deadener and the.plastidip, the plywood and packing blanket was less than $10. I still haven't hooked it all up, or worked the bugs out. (There are always bugs with us amateur engineers). I am hoping to run speaker wires and hook up the amp today if family Thanksgiving schedules permit. I will post the success or failure of this system after it is up and running.
Thanks for the interest |

Am I correctly understanding that you basically are making the sides and bottom of your enclosure out of a blanket, and the sub and panel it is attached to will merely lay on top of the spare??

The sub has an inch of clearance over the spare, and the side surfaces are covered with Roadkill sound deadener. The blanket is just to take up air space, help with low tones and stay within the recommended air space for the sub. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so they say. If I can't make it sound good in this configuration I will have to buy or build a "real" enclosure.

you may as well plan on building or buying. this sub will perform poorly for sure.
#1 your "enclosure" is not sealed in any fashion. Subwoofers in particular do not like air leaks ( with exception to an engineered port of specific size and length ) even the smallest of leaks can ruin a speakers performance. #2 your "enclosure" will be way too big for this sub. in addition, the blanket you are using to "take up space" is actually working in the opposite of what you have planned. it is fooling the subwoofer into thinking it is in an even larger enclosure, similar to the use of polyfill, or an aperiodic membrane. #3 Please anchor your sub and its enclosure to the car. I had a friend of mine years ago with a sub and box in his rear hatch, not anchored. someone hit him head-on, and while the air bag may have saved his life, the sub-box against the back of his head left him with brain damage for life. there are a few posts in here of those who have built boxes that rest inside the spare tires, and some are very detailed in the building of the enclosures, as well. check them out, and maybe get a few ideas. Heres one of them. Round spare tire Subwoofer enclosure, Kenwood Excelon DNX690HD head unit install Lets get that sub in there Slammin' but lets do it right, and safely.

I will heed your advice and anchor it down. It sounds great, much better than my Infinity Basslink sub in my old car. I recommend this sub set up, and it only cost me about $80, I keep it turned down a bit so it doesn't dominate the music.
These Hybrid Audio Technologies Unity speakers seem to lack some mid bass and vocals, I am still making adjustments to the frequencies on the amp, so maybe it just isn't dialed in correctly yet. They are a major upgrade from the factory Bose. |
