Rear firing will give you louder sound as it will be forced to redirect to the front. Zenclosure makes a few boxes for what your trying to do

Not as loud I know that much can not go into the details of why as it's been a while sense I was asked that.

Because of the way we perceive sound, woofer placement is not critical. While there will be some slight differences in sound, depending on which way the woofer is facing, it's not going to make that much difference in a car. I'd avoid top-firing setups just because of the dust that will collect and the possibility of dropping something on the cones. YMMV

What he said. Difference in noticeable volume is negligent. Up, down, sideways, upside down, front, back, its all good. either way that sub is 2 to 3 feet from your ears.....

Generally, our ears and brain will not be able to tell a significant difference especially in a small car like the Z. Technically however, it should sound louder. In the Z, hard to tell exactly by how much unless you measure. If you use an RTA, you will see a clear distinction. There is a tendency for most lower frequencies not to be affected whether the sub faces up or towards the rear. Not sure exactly what it would be for the Z. Acoustics make a big difference. A point I'd like to make, you cannot rely entirely on on sub positioning and should more importantly take into account your enclosure, gear, and processing. My suggestion is to experiment positioning before you lock down on your design. Just want to share a couple of tech papers I have relied on in the past.
