What to do with your mobile phone
I recently ripped out the Bose system in my Z and replaced it with an Alpine head unit, Rockford amp and speakers, and the CervinVega spare tire sub. The system is awesome, but the Android and Apple Car Play are flakey and do not remain connected consistently. I have swapped the USB cable, but it still does not work.
I have been trying to find a way to mount the cell phone so that I can see maps and other information like Torque. My phone is heavy. I use it as my wallet with credit cards and the case. While swapping the Bose system, I discovered the back of the cubby came off. I got the idea of mounting magnets between the backing and the leather-covered lid. The magnets would have to be extremely strong to hold the phone and get through the distance caused by the plastic-covered lid. I had some smaller magnets that proved promising but were not strong enough. I found some 70 lb pull force magnets. I order two of them. I used two to stop the spinning effect. Also, placing the metal plate on the outside of the case helps profoundly as opposed to inside the case. These magnets are no joke and can be dangerous because they can jump together or other metal objects with great force. Be very careful full using them. They are a snug fit and are not held in place by anything. It just worked out. I don't store anything in the cubby, so I have not had any issues with the magnets grabbing anything inside the cubby. I also like that it is a clean install, and you cannot tell there are magnets behind the lid. The magnets have not affected my credit cards or cell phone. I used a graduated hole saw to make a cleaner and snugger hole for the magnets. Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope this helps someone else enjoy their Z just a bit more. Cheers! |
