Tomorrow I start rebuilding the electrical in my Z...
So I've been wanting to do this for several years. Here are some of the things I'll be doing:
Alternator - (keep in mind, those RPM ratings are alternator RPM, which I think should be about 2.5x the engine RPM - I'll need to take some measurements and get a slightly shorter belt, probably) New AGM Northstar battery and KnuKonceptz distribution setup, all 1/0 Kompression terminals: I'll be doing 1/0 Big 3, then dual runs of 1/0 to the rear, and dual 1/0 power and ground to/from the sub amp. 4g to each of the other 2 amps. Here are the custom engraved terminals: I've got another custom surprise coming in a few weeks, too - a custom grill set made for my subwoofers, but it'll be a few more weeks before it's done. It's kinda expensive, so I'm doing some of these other projects in the middle and having to make some payments on it. This weekend I'm also swapping in a new 10.1" Android headunit with digital coax output to the DSP in my Tahoe, I may do the same headunit in the Z if it works out, and I'll need to pick up another DSP to take over from my Zapco amps. So, I'll post pics of the grill assembly when it gets here. It's going to cover over these: I guarantee it'll be the only one in the world. lol I think it's gonna be SWEEEEEEEET... I'm excited... the excessively large wiring and alt will support me wiring my amp down to 0.5 ohms. I think I may port my subs, too, I dunno. Sealed box is oversized for them, as is.
I'm excited for my sub grills to be done, too, they're going to be awesome. They will also have a 370Z theme... |

Alternator is about half out. It's kind of a bitch, really... put the new Android head unit in the Tahoe, got the Z up on jacks, swapped out the batt, now about halfway through with the alt. Then running the wire begins...
W00T! As I was typing, my buddy got it out. |

So we called it a night... the new alternator is missing a bolthole on the backside, so the very long bolt needs some washers and a new nut to hold it in place - the nut on the stock alternator is encased in the housing somehow. No biggie, it is in place and just needs that bolt tightened. We had to unbolt the electric fans to get it out, that long bolt would not come out, it was too long with the fans in place. No biggie.
I found out the wire loom I bought is really pretty marginal in fitting over 1/0 welding cable, I should have gone up a size. The shrink tubing doesn't fit at all. Dangit. So things won't be as "dressed up" as I wanted, but I can always work on that later when I get some more. Doesn't sound like we got a LOT done on the Z, but most of the underhood wiring is done, and we didn't really start on it until, oh I dunno, after 7 anyways. And we knocked off around 10 to kick back and have some Scotch (The Balvenie Portwood 1993). Today I have to go in to the office from 9-12 and my buddy will be working on the rest of the wiring until I get back. Probably be swapping out the Dynaudio midbasses in the doors for a pair of Stereo Integrity TM65mkII I have sitting around. I've got a bunch of damping material sitting around, but I don't know if we'll get to messing with that. Have some CLD tiles (constrained layer damping) for vibration and damping, some closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl sheeting to make a sandwich (this is behind the doorpanels in my Tahoe). Stuff came from this place a couple of years ago and I've just never gotten around to doing anything with it - just like the SI midbasses, lol. Here's the only pic I took - it's the fuse block we put next to the battery. These KnuKonceptz blocks have a really great compression connection system that gets great contact with your wiring and keeps a nice clean look. I like them. I'll use an identical block to this one for all the grounds in the back, and a larger one for my 2 supply lines of 1/0, dual 1/0 out to the sub amp and 2 4g out to the smaller amps. These will all be hidden under the amprack and false floor in the hatch, though. They'll actually be under the amprack and then under another amp that is under the amprack. lol Still alot to be done today. The Wife wants my buddy to look at her truck while he's here, too, she has a problem with her backup camera and with one of her tweeters. <sigh> Damned demanding *** wimminfolks. lol |

Removed Dynaudio mids, had to slightly enlarge the opening on the baffle for the Stereo Integrity TM65mkII:
SI mid in passenger door: So that's about it... rewired my subwoofers to 0.5 ohms - significant increase in punch. Voltage went from just over 14V to 14.9 solid at idle. If I turn it up, it gets crazy quick, and it will drop the voltage (naturally) at idle. But if I barely up the RPMs, to like 1200, the voltage climbs back to nearly 15 and stays pretty rock solid, even with really hammering bass - the wife came out of the house and gave me some serious stink-eye when I was testing it with Shaggy's "Wild Tonight". So overall, it was a good upgrade. All new massively overbuilt wiring, prettied it up with a bunch of cable sleeving, 1/0 Big 3, 300+ amp alternator, big Northstar AGM battery, rewired subs to 0.5 ohms, replaced Dyns with SI midbasses.... I think that's about it. I'm pleased. Now I have a shiteload of tuning to do on BOTH vehicles over the next few weeks/months. |
