Inexpensive Bose system transformation

I had an 8" powered subwoofer laying around that I used to have installed in my Eclipse so I thought I'd put it in the Z to see how it would sound since it's an easy installation. It completely transformed the sound of the Bose system. I'm shocked at how much better it sounds. For anyone on a budget build, this is a really good upgrade.

Ditto. I have a 2017 subaru crosstrek with the base stereo system. Not wanting to get full blown stereo swapping on it, the first addition I made was a small Pioneer powered sub under the drivers seat (I believe its only a 5.5" sub). Great difference in sound quality.
Cheap, and Easy.

I have an aftermarket head unit. The powered sub is fed directly off the preamp of the headunit so it completely bypasses the bose system.

What in the soundstage improved? To me, in stock form, the Bose system has no highs, lows, or clarity. Obviously the lows are improved with this addition, but what else?
