I know you can't swap the bose system in place. Not sure about another base model radio. I would say yes as long as the BT is internal. However the external mic you would have to somehow add.

Which head unit are you starting of with?

Base, definitely no. The amount of sub systems required to be installed, like the Bluetooth module (which is separate from the HU), microphone, steering wheel controls, speaker amp, and the wiring harness to make it all work make upgrading the base system monetarily impractical. It isn't impossible just you could get a top of the line after market system (head unit, amp, speakers, sub, sub enclosure, etc.) for the cost of upgrading the base system.

Non-NAV Bose, maybe. Not sure what hardware was changed to add Bluetooth Audio but I would assume the Bluetooth module and the head unit were updated. I'm unsure if swapping out those parts would work.

Bose NAV, yes (not 100% sure). I remember reading about somebody swapping out a 2009 NAV system for a newer one and it working. There is a thread somewhere on the forum.

IMO I would go aftermarket. The time, money, and hassle of upgrading the factory radio to a different factory radio is not worth it. You get better sound quality, better functionality, and better options/features for less money going aftermarket.

I'd go aftermarket too. I just pulled the OEM stereo from my base and replaced it with a pioneer. They are garbage. Practically anything is an upgrade.
