know nothing about audio just want simple direct replacement speakers non bose base z
first of all hello, new to the forum, first post and my first Z. it's the base sport i guess. anyway its not the model that comes with the bose system. I know nothing at all about audio at all except that the oem system in this vehicle sucks. I know everyone has different opinions, so I'll try to narrow the choices down. I just want to replace all of the oem speakers with much better ones, I want everything to be a direct replacement and to retain the oem speaker covers. I don't want to buy an amp, run any wires, install a crossover(since i really dont know what that is anyway). I just need recommendations on good direct replacement speakers and a head unit if you guys recommend it (bluetooth would be nice). budget is about $1000 give or take. model/part numbers would be great because Im good at ordering wrong parts ha. before i get flamed, yes i searched and read 10 pages of threads but the information was inconsistent and usually more involved than i wanted to get with this. Thanks in advance for the help. -Al

If you want to do a basic upgrade with a $1000 budget i'd say get a Pioneer double din off amazon. Actually picked up a Pioneer avh-x4800bs for my wife's crv for a little under $300, then take it somewhere and have them install it with whatever basic name brand speakers they have. The headunit is where most your $ will go if you buy from a shop so at least buy that off amazon so you only have to pay the install fee.
And really if you dont plan to run an amp then just about any inexpensive name brand speaker system or components will sound about the same. If you do all the work yourself you could easily do a basic upgrade for around $600-700. If it were me, i'd do the Pioneer double din i mentioned off amazon, a set of DLS rm6.2 with like a DLS cc2 or ca23 amp (both on ebay) and do the install myself and still be way under budget. Even if you have to take it all in to get installed you'll probably end up in the $1000-1100 range. I know you dont want to run an amp or crossover for a set of components but it would be worth it. You obviously care enough about how your music sounds to spend a $1000, should make it worth it, and be extremely happy with it. And if you've never install car audio it's really not as hard as it seems. Hope that helps. |

That's a decent budget for such a short list. you are basically looking for cheap 75watt speakers since you are not amping them or anything extra. As for head unit, you will need to pick one you like, get a harness to connect to the oem and you will have to splice a few wires. and connect to the head unit. No need to waste good $$ on super good speakers if you are not amping them. I bet you can get a decent speaker for like $75 that will meet your simple goal.

okay great, so since the car's oem headunit is double din, as long as i replace it with another double din head unit i dont even need to buy one of those trim kits(bezel/surround/whatever it is) . just the adapter harness to connect to the car's oem harness? will the steering wheel controls still work? Thank You

The newer radio bezel does not allow a aftermarket HU. You will have to buy a new bezel kit. The harness is simply a piece where one end plug into the factory HU wire clip and the other end is just color coded wires. You will then tie your new HU to these wire. This basically just makes it so you don't have to hack up the factory wires. As for the steering radio controls, once you put in any new head unit, they won't work unless you buy another adapter like Parrot. I never used or install one of those so someone else will fill you in on that.

You will also need the antenna adapter. As far as speakers go, heres what I suggest. Swap out head unit first, since you have no desire to amp your speakers, or get involved with any other add-ons, listen to your factory speakers with your new head unit. You may actually be surprised, and be satisfied with the difference the new head unit alone makes. If not, then move on to the speakers.
If you do get to that point, I would suggest (if only to simplify for you) Just changing the woofers in the doors to something that has a little more midbass output, Like the CDT ES-L6, and leave your dash tweeters in. Changing the dash tweeters without a proper crossover network is not going to gain you a whole lot in terms of value per $$. In the perfect world I would tell you to get a component set, but what I have described IMHO would be your best route at this time.

yah as ron posted, try the HU swap first. ive been pretty happy with my pioneer HU only swap. thing's EQ transforms the junk door speakers into something i can actually enjoy.
also note dat i dont want heavy parts in my sports car, so the flimsy speakers are plenty for me with the audio quality i got just from the HU swap. |

The OEM base speakers are of the worst quality I've never experienced.
Whatever 3rd party speakers you install, at least they should be far better than those poor. I'm using JBL GT7-6C. It is not expensive and pretty good alternative to the OEM. But please do not volume up too much with this model. It might do harm to your speakers. Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk |
