Rear Pocket Sub Box
I found this "Rear pocket SubWoofer Box" at caraudiofactory.com, and really like the "stealthness" of the design. But tucking it partially into the area in front of the spare only makes it big enough for 2-8" subs. And the design seems to limit what subs will be able to fit as well (I have a call into them to get more dimensional data). Possibly only shallower models.
I really don't want anything big and awkward. The Stealthbox is just not worth a grand to me. I've been very close to going with the Wicked C.A.S. corner box with the single JL 10W3v3. So if I did this one, I'd want 8's of comparable or better sound quality with hopes that 2-8's would be able to accomplish what a single 10" would do. I want some punch to this, but I'm not into the super deep, rumbly, vibrate the license plate type of bass. Will subs that size, even higher end ones, fill the Z with enough low end? I've done all sorts of searches and haven't seen any comments about it on this forum or anywhere else. They state that it was added last May, so it doesn't seem that it's been around very long, but I would have thought there would be some opinions around. This forum is always good for a few (million) opinions... So, how about it... anyone know anything about this enclosure or Car Audio Factory? |

Interesting. I haven't seen that one before. It appears that there is a divider between the 2 subs, so at .4 cu ft each, if you were to open that up, puts you at .8, certainly enough for most 10" subs.
It would certainly be easy enough to trace the face of the box and cut a new face panel with a 10" in the center, cut the existing face of box to accommodate, and lay your new faceplate right over. a little piece of carpet, and viola. 10" sub box

Why would you think that 2x 8" subwoofers would not be able to do the work of 1x 10" subwoofer?

the difference would be negligible, at best. It would be purely a personal preference for sure.

True enough... I was also discounting any significant differences in performance and efficiency as well.

My concern with this enclosure is that it states a 5" max depth and a 4" magnet diameter, obviously implying some obstruction at the far end. But how far? I might be able to get a decent shallow sub, but how shallow does it have to be? A 4" magnet? I think the stock speaker in my old Sentra was bigger... So, I waited a day to hear some info about the dimensions of the box. I called back and he said that they didn't have one in stock and they were building one so they could measure it... (No drawings, sketches, napkin scribblings?) He tells me to hang on as he makes his way into the shop; saws and hammers drowning him out as he whistles to get someone's attention. Eventually, he gets back to a lower decibel area and says, "It's around 5" deep and 4" or 4 1/2" across at the bottom." *sigh* Ok, how far down before it goes to 4"? "Oh, 3" or 4". You can buy the box and then find subs that fit." I don't think so...
Meanwhile, my local shop quoted me a Stealthbox for $771 (and, yes, they are an authorized JL dealer), which makes it much more palatable. It would have been at least $400-500 with the 8" setup, depending on what subs I could have shoe-horned in. Not worth the "savings". |
