Good idea or sacrilege
Hi, so I own a red 2020, but what brings me here is I bumped into a guy with a 40th, mint.
We had a nice talk, compared our two Z's and the 10 years apart they were. I have to say, the 40th is breathtaking, the colour and those wheels over the red calipers, my my. We talked about my car, the 2020 with the new blacked out headlamps, tinted out tail lamps, and the chrome door handles. Came to the realization that while the 40th colour is breathtaking, it would probably be even more breath taking with the new 2018+ headlights, taillights and chrome door handles. The darker tint of all three of these pieces would probably go better with the 40th paint colour. So it got me thinking, since these are OEM, direct fit parts whose installation is completely reversible; would doing so on such a 'Collectors' car be good or sacrilege? It might reduce the resell value a small amount but "sacrilege"? C'mon, it's just a car.
Save the OEM parts in case the next owner wants to go back to stock.

I do think the 40th looks really, really nice. I'd go about my car so much differently if it was a 40th — still would do mods, but baby it, car cover it all the time. Replacing the paint is a bit of a tougher flex if I recall correctly.
It, and the Nismo V1 will very likely climb in value, but I wouldn't say it's to a point you'd be calling it an investment. The immediate satisfaction likely outweighs that prospect. Judging by how much time it took the S30 to command 6-digits (and that's not so often) in particular circumstances, and then the same for the Z32 while also being a beneficiary of current 90's JDM demand, it's gonna be a long time for something like the 40th Anniversary to climb value — and it's not going to be some kind of amazing "Let's close the Krusty Krab!" pay day. For the most part I expect the 40th will be the type of car you'd regret selling because changing your mind and reacquiring another later would come at a loss. |

I like what many owners have done to their Zs and should not worry about what people think. Many however, have this pie in the sky view of the Z34's worth and collectability. It'll be an inexpensive 2 dr coupe for a very long time and unless thousands are crushed, recycled, or pieced for parts, kept no less than 50 years, AND if there is a demand for it, then maybe. Fingers crossed for 2060 for all of you who believe that or will be around for it.

Unpopular Opinion: i think the next z will be a flop, years later down the line the 370z will be looked upon as the last of its kind and the one to get.. at that point it'll be about finding a good condition non-riced 370z. Given the current direction of the market, i don't think it'll be long to get there.

40th with the dark headlight housing looks amazing. I’ve seen one around L.A. with a full nismo V2 conversion. Sadly there’s absolutely no collectibility for the 40th, nor should there be. The beauty of the Z is to be cheap enough where you enjoy driving and putting on the miles. I purchased my 40th a couple years ago from carmax with under 5k miles for about half of what it would of originally sold for. Heartbreaking the original owner never got to enjoy it as much as I have thinking it would be an investment :/
