Will 4 235/40-18 snows fit on base wheels?
Looking at the Michelin website, I see that Pilot Alpin PA2 in size 235/40-18 will fit a wheel width from 8" to 9.5"
Pilot® Alpin® PA2™: Winter Tires: MICHELIN® Automotive Tires: Michelin Tires The stock (base) wheels are 8.0" front, and 9.0" rear. The only snows I have found in the stock sizes are Bridgestone Blizzak LM60's, which are available in the staggered stock sizes (225/50 front & 245/45 rear) for about $200/tire. By my calculations, the stock tires run about 755 revs/mile and the 235/40's would be about 5% higher at 794 revs/mile, so the speedo would read fast. But this seems like an acceptable range to me. So it appears to me that the Michelins all 4 same size will work on these wheels. Anyone BTDT? Any gotcha's that I should be aware of before ordering them? |
stay away from blizzacks they suck. i got the pilot alpins and they are the shlt

heard that blizzacks turn into all seasons pretty fast, i bought them as i had no choice... last minute deal b/c there's a winter tire law here and i wanted to drive... wtv

My specific concern is differences in sidewall flex when mounting the same size tires on two different width wheels. The 235/40-18's are designed for 8.5" wheels. So for the fronts, the sidewalls will have too much flex and at the rear too little relative to each other.
What will that do to my handling (not that winter tires handle...)? |
The rear tires will be too stretched. It would not look right at all. thats pretty much my concern for your car.

Well, currently there is not a Michelin Alpin fitment for the 18" wheels on our cars. Looks like I'm going to be stuck with Bridgestone Blizzaks LM60 in the stock sizes. I'm disappointed!
I'll post on my experiences with them. HJM |
They should fit.. the tires can't be that bad.
