My question has to do with break clearance as well. I understand that offset does not always guarantee Akebono clearance. I understand that it has to do with spoke design and etc.

What I was wondering - is there a measurement I can request from a shop or the manufacturer, that will help me check the clearance, without having to put the rim on.

I am not able to find a shop that sells the rims I was looking at, so they need to be ordered on line. It would be great if there was a way to measure if the wheels would fit without actually having a the wheel on hand.
you bring a valid point there, i have seen wheels with the same offsets, same width/diameter but different spoke design where one would fit and another banged on the caliper. the new style sport rays are extremely close to the calipers, seriously measured in millimeters. unfortunately the only way to find out 100% is to put them on and see if they clear or not. if you really like the one that does not clear just get a 5mm spacer which will give just enough to clear a caliper but not mess with the body that much, if at all
