Tire wear in the middle to inside on rear

I had four Bf Goodrich tires with swift and SPC rear camber kit for around 16k miles, but now the rears are ball. The rear tires wear most in the middle and toward inside as show in the pictures. I got my alignment done when I installed those tires and it was within spec. at the time. Is this caused by toe problem or something else? I know it's not over inflated problem because I always ran those tires at 35psi. Does anyone have this problem on their car before and what was the solution? Thanks.

overinflation! is my best guess... do you live in a particularly hot area?

Hatsuongmai 05-22-2014 01:13 AM

no I live in northern California so the temp. is not bad at all compare to other parts of the country.

How could running those tires at 35psi over inflated? If overinflation is the problem, then how come the front tires are not affected?

This is a classic over-inflation wear pattern.

Check your tyre gauge ... it may be reading low (i.e. - gauge says 35psi, actually 48psi) - stranger things have happened.

What are sizes and rim-widths ... this can also occur where the tyre is too wide for the rim, even if the pressures are within spec.

Thanks guys. I'll get another tire gauge and check again. I'm running those tires at stock size. Front 245/40/19. Rear 275/35/19. Tire is BFGoodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2

The logical culprit is the tyre gauge as sizes are OEM !!

Joes Racing makes a good tire gauge. Amazon has a good selection and good price. Not sure if sponsors have these.

I just bought the JOES Racing Products 32307 tire gauge.

Is there anyway that something could cause my toe settings to off after a few months? Would toe problem cause tires to wear unevenly like this?

I don't think toe would do this type of wear. This looks to be over-inflation. We'll find out in several days when you check it.

Quick test: You could drop your pressure to 28 psi and let your car sit for a while. Then drive it around the neighborhood and your TPMS should give a warning that you have low pressure. If it does not go off then your pressure is actually higher than 28 psi since the TPMS will let you know if pressure is below 29 psi and then you know that your tire gauge is not reading correctly.

Just remember it takes a couple hours for the sensor to sense the low pressure that is why I said to let it sit for a while after you release pressure down to 28.

Or you can simply wait until your Joes Racing Tire Gauge arrives.

probably just the quality of the tires in general and how it cant support the negative camber maybe?

try asymetric tires next time. they have inner reinforcement belts.

Looks like over inflation and incorrect alignment to me. Looks scrubbed off (camber).

How many miles on them?

kenchan 05-22-2014 01:43 PM

but he states it was set at 35psi the whole time?

Boss_302 05-22-2014 02:01 PM

it looks like tire pressure is too high, could be a in accurate gauge, also make sure the tires are cold when you set the pressure. after you driven awhile check the pressure when the tires are hot. pressure will increase 3- 4 lbs. you may want to bleed a pound or two. and find a happy medium.
By the way how do the BFG s feel on the car. Had Comps on my Mustang and was happy, The Z I have now, the factory tires are almost used up. thought I go back to BFG's but have not seen much feed back here forum.

yah in accurate guage could be the culprit. but if he set the psi when tires were hot, then it would be much lower when cold.

i still think it's the crappy(?) tires. maybe alignment, but mostly tires.

Hatsuongmai 05-22-2014 04:50 PM

I just borrowed another tire gauge from my friend and measured the psi when cold and the tires are at 40psi. Looks like tire pressure was the culprit. However, I'll do another alignment when I replace the two rear just to make sure that the alignment is still good.

Regarding the Bf Goodrich tires, I used on my RSX before and they last a good 40k miles with occasionally canyon. I would expect that these would last me at least 25k. Performance wise, but it's pretty decent, not Michelin SS of course but enough for DD and occasionally canyon. However, it have more road noise compare to the kumho 4x and Michelin SS.
