Refinishing Nismo rims

I had some rash on one of my rims and the rest are not looking so good. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with getting them put through an acid bath and powdercoated to match the stock color as closely as possible. I wanted to have the insides of the wheel coated as well due to stock color looking pretty worn in there now.

Is this possible on stock alloys?

chops 01-05-2014 12:46 PM

should be. i havent done it, but ive gotten quotes to get it done. its a little bit expensive because the stock wheel paint on the non gunmetal rims are a 3 stage, black base layer, then a silver on top, with a clear on top of that.

I am looking at just powdercoating them instead of doing the 3 stage paint. I don't care about matching the stock color perfectly since all 4 rims will be done, but I would like it to be as close as possible.

You should do them in white... Red car with white wheels is hot. I had a wheel powder coated years ago on my 350z track wheels as well as brake calipers and the paint is gorgeous and super durable but if your rash is really bad on the wheel they may have to sand down too much to where it is a bit noticeable. ...
Mine were only scratched from a drift event so the wheel came out perfect

anyone ever heard of awrswheelrepair? I am in the pittsburgh area and just wondering if anyone has used them in the past...

Joepro 01-06-2014 03:33 PM

I had mine done at durable powder coaters in export,pa. Mike does a good job compared to what I have seen in our area east of the city. This was fresh from him last winter.

wow that does look pretty good. Was that stock color?

Joepro 01-06-2014 11:13 PM

Gun metal...picked it out of his
color book almost matches the calipers just a shade lighter the next one seemed too dark, I am happy with them and they are holding up well.

Volk Z 01-07-2014 11:11 AM

If I were paying to have all re finished I would go with a non oem color... maybe candy red or hyper blue... that's me though

Joepro 01-07-2014 11:14 AM

on red I like white and bronze, only reason I did not go bronze is because I did that on my 350z and had the intake tubes done to match the wheels and I thought bronze would look tacky under the hood.

Well since your wheels and engine typically are not seen at the same time unless you like to rock no hood for a weight mod lol then it would be ok to not match

Joepro 01-07-2014 02:11 PM

still think bronze intake tubes would look ghetto fab.

did that coater also powdercoat the insides of the rims or just the face? Also how did those tires work out for ya?

Joepro 01-07-2014 03:27 PM

He does the entire wheel, I did not get a lot of drive time on them, but the sidewalls are stiffer, they do feel a tad down on grip from the PSS, but the ride and mushy sidewalls are much better, I will be getting matching tires for the front come spring time!

Joepro 01-07-2014 05:15 PM

how long did it take them to do all 4 of your wheels? I am assuming they stripped everything completely off like the wheel weights, sticky residue, etc. right?

Joepro 01-07-2014 09:37 PM

5 days I think...it was a decent turn around time, it just depends how busy he is.

and they completely strip the wheel of everything first? Or did you do it?

Joepro 01-07-2014 09:50 PM

he did everything, I dont know the exact prep he did, but all I did was drop them off, got them back pc'ed!

Alright sounds good. I just emailed them to see if they are able to fix rash at all on rims. Do you happen to know the answer to that?

Joepro 01-07-2014 10:12 PM

I do not see why not, Im sure that wont be an issue. just sand it down during prep before its pc'ed I imagine.

ok cool. I emailed them so we'll see what they say for sure. After the time you've had with the rims after powder coating you would recommend them?

Volk Z 01-11-2014 11:02 AM

They will do an acid bath to eliminate all paint down to the metal and will buff light sand the rash marks also powder coating is a fairly thick layer of paint so it would hide any minor imperfections as well.

Shadezz 01-11-2014 11:10 AM

Got mine done last summer for 300.00 he sandblast the wheels and then powder coats.

Do you think this will be covered?

If you were in SoCal I'd recommend Son Tran. He's the man! Here's what he did with my curbed Nismo wheels. www.tinyurl.com/sontranreview

For a quality shop it shouldn't be a problem the acid bath and sand blast will eliminate most of that

Thats all the damage, yes. But the other rims have marks here and there that I want to have powdercoated away.

I'm in the market to have my nismos refinished. I'm thinking bronze. But I would love to see a pic if anyone has seen a set in that color.

A friend of mine had just one of his nismos refinished and it didn't match the rest

That's why I tell people to do them all as it will typically never match. ..

that curb rash will be easily coverable for whoever you choose to do them.

roplusbee 01-16-2014 09:04 PM

I'm digging that color Mike!

That's one of the reasons why I am doing all 4 even though only one is rashed. The other ones have small marks here and there as well.
