rear tire wear
just checked my tread depths on the rear tires at ~ 26k miles:
(from inside to outside) Left rear: 5/32, 6/32, 5/32, 2/32 Right rear: 5/32, 4/32, 5/32, 2/32 Outside wear is much more. I did have an alignment back in the early spring so I don't think I have alignment issues. I think it might just be my driving style (I like corners and turns:driving:) Does this look pretty typical? I didn't check my fronts because it was getting dark outside and I didn't feel like getting on my knees again (no jokes or you get a :gtfo2:) Couple more months I'll be putting on my winter tires anyways then in the spring I was planning to get a set of PSS's for my summer changeover. I know the front tires have much less wear but from what I've read it's better not to have 2 different brands/types of tires on the front and rear- Anyone do this without problems or is it better just to change all 4 every time? |
Some info needed:
Stock suspension I assume? How many miles on your current tires? Don't think RE050 last 26k miles of aggressive cornering. How much cornering do you do? Canyon runs? Occasional track time? Or daily commute with some fast curves? Check your fronts, and take pic if you can, makes it easier to identify the type of wear. Only time you have that kind of wear is with lots of aggressive driving, so aggressive that OEM camber curve isn't enough, and rolling the tires over, putting lot more pressure on the outside. If that's the case, your fronts will be worse. But that mostly happens up front. Most likely, your toe and/or camber are off. You should have been provided with a printout of your alignment results, before and after. Even then, some shops (dealership included) may not do it right, or lean on cars to get reading within spec. |
Or maybe as simple as low pressure? Interested to see the outcome
Edit: nvm, low pressure should cause wear both inside and outside |
it appears that you don't have enough camber in the rears. If you want to eeek out a little more tread you can inflate the rears a little more that way you wear a little bit more of the center line of the tire. Just a little helpful tip :tiphat:

The outside of your tires seem to be wearing faster tho. I'd say don't worry about having different makes / model of tire for a lil while. DO NOT track that way, but driving to work is all good. |
These are the original oem potenza tires. I do about 80% highway driving with no tracking which is why I'm getting a lot of miles on these. Il check tire pressures and see how they look. Inflating the rears a few more psi does sound like it might help. I'll check the front treads also. I'll also probably get an alignment just to be safe after I have my winter tires/rims put on.

What was your last reading for rear camber?

yah, my tire wears a tad more on the inside than the outside. you probably need more neg camber on the rear as posted earlier.
btw, you got 26k miles?! holy crap. you just drive like haboob. he's 100yrs old. :icon17: i usually get about 10k on my summer tires. im happy with that. :) |
370z comes with a fair amount of negative camber in stock form already...with his driving style and outside wear, if cause is camber alone, his camber has got to swing to the positive side, which will look very apparent to keen eyes. I bet combo of camber and toe are off.
If camber is still negative, inflating may help. If its positive, inflating will make it worse. Keep us posted, interested in outcome. Funny how the wear is even from left to right though. |
