plastidip or paint wheels?

Is there a reason leaving it on there is a bad idea? I've never plasti-dipped anything so I don't know too much about it other than what I've seen online. Seems like a lot of poeple have used it on various parts.

Because plastidip looks like ***. You bought a $30k+ car, don't treat it like a Honda.

There's a lot of people who disagree with me, but I'm of the opinion that you should either do it right or not at all. Plastidip is the aesthetic equivalent of the washer mod.

For me its about what works for a good price. Paying some crazy prices out there for something just as functional for a cheaper price works for me, because i race car.

Plus wheels will look like ****. Can't stop brake dust and who the hell wants to clean wheels daily.

A silver wheel is just as functional as a painted, powdercoated or plastidipped wheel, and it comes free on the car. Maybe plastidip makes sense if you're in a situation where you want to sell a 100% stock vehicle, or turn in a stock vehicle at the end of the lease. I think plastidip looks bad. Others don't. If cost was not a concern in any way, would anyone use plastidip?

Never said silver wasn't, but if he/I want a certain look, then cheapest functional is best. And you are 100% wrong about paint. No one paints wheels. It doesn't last and it chips with ease and you have to take further steps with clear coat etc. (and im not talking about you in a garage, professional so maybe you have a better chance of lasting). Powdercoat is harder and best and plasti is soft like rubber and doesn't chip. With plastis new shine or clear you can also make it smooth and look none matte. Again brake dust gets on everything. I never wash my wheels because it looks just like they would, matte black. To me that's worth it by itself. If cost was no concern, yes I'd still plasti! Paint and powder can still chip. I sure as **** don't want to be without a wheel for days, breaking the tire down, doing all that work for a damn chip. Plasti can be fixed in minutes.

Plenty of people paint wheels. I'd prefer it to powdercoating on forged wheels. If the wheels were cast, powdercoat away.

You and I'll never see eye to eye on plastidip. I think it's tacky and cheap. To each his own.

Paint your rims KAV and your door handles Gun Metallic. The only thing I would use PlastiDip for is for blacking out the fangs. Since that area is a stone chip magnet, the elasticity of PlastiDip makes it the perfect coating. It can be easily touched-up - it is way more self-leveling than paint - and when it finally looks bad, peel it off and reapply.

In spite of what was stated further up the thread, I painted mine. Two reasons:

1. I wanted an exact match to KAV; and
2. when they do get nicked/scratched, it's much easier to do a touch-up.

Don't fool yourself, a powder coated wheel can get a stone chip; I've seen it numerous times. I don't deny that powder coating isn't a much more durable coating, but it does have some drawbacks too. I've got two nicks on my powder coated calipers, so it can happen.

As with everything else, it's all a function of the environment you drive your car in.

God the ignorance is palpable. Yeah manufactures know best! Hey 09-11's how's you oil temps doing with no oil cooler? I could name a million things they do wrong. I never said PC didn't chip, in fact I did say it chips. But no one here is going to want to break a wheel down every time a chip happens as I said, therefore dip is a great easy cheap solution. Whether you live in snow environments or not you still have sand blasting out west, rocks and gravel else where, salt water by the oceans etc. I'd never paint because it never lasts! I could also care less about a company I've never heard of who paints wheels. I bet they're real performers . Funny my enkie rpf1 (which I'm sure has RS beat every way possible) are PC'ed.

Hmm, having not seen any plasti-dip in person, I can't really say. I've heard there are some done well and some done poorly. just liked the idea that it could be easily changed back if it wasn't that i expected. Thanks for your input, this was just an idea I was kicking around yesterday. I will look into the various options more. I might just do the lights and leave the wheels.

What about plasti-dip on the handles? Does that end up looking cheap?

I should just do mine and take pics, since I have the Smoke and Gunmetal dips available. :P I don't like how our handles attract fingerprint smears and wouldn't mind seeing them color matched to my car (gunmetal).
