I'm planning on changing my tires and I am wondering why people choose wider size tires on their stock (sport) wheels? Like going to 275 and 305. What's the disadvantage

I'm planning on changing my tires and I am wondering why people choose wider size tires on their stock (sport) wheels? Like going to 275 and 305. What's the disadvantage of this? Finally, what dimensions will you guys recommend if I wanted wider tires on my stock sports wheels? Thanks.
