Rim repair questions

I posted this in a other thread that didn't get much attention as it wasn't wheel related.
Long story short I curbed my rim a little and want to get it fixed. The damage is pretty minor.
What do you guys think about wheel repair where they don't take off the rim and just mask the area around it? I'm not sure of that's normal for wheel repair or not. I'm also a little concerned about that, and would prefer that they take the wheel off incase of over spray and to let the paint dry...
I've only gotten one estimate and and wondering if I should call around till I find a shop that'll take off the wheel to repair it.

ive seen mobile wheel repair places that remove the wheel/tire from the car, but just mask off the tire to do the wheel repair. usually around 125-150 per wheel and takes about 1.5hrs.

That would be fine by me. I'm not really concerned with overspray on the tire, I just don't want over spray on the car. Not sure if I'm being overly paranoid or if I'm right in avoiding places that don't take off the rim.

it's really up to you.

if it's only cosmetic damage (no bends, deep scrapes), cosmetic repair is all that's needed.

Definitely only cosmetic. I was wondering more on the process of repainting the wheel if I should be concerned with overspray.

i think it really depends on the tech, but the wheels ive seen done with professional spot repair and touchup turned out pretty much factory finish and no rough spots from over spray.

you can probably clay and polish it out later if there are any rough spots.

Wow that's a rape price, I got 3 wheels done for $100, and I tipped $20, so 120 total.

OP, that masking method is standard, they get all the rash out and don't worry about overspray because they (should) use a tiny air brush

is it? i suppose it depends on where you live.

but considering a new oem wheel costs $500+ i think $125 is not a bad deal for someone. plus, waiting time is very short.

Yeah, car stuff in SoCal is cheap I guess, but I'd pay $100+ if I curbed my WHOLE wheel or if I had a really hard color to match

Thanks for the info, I wasn't really sure of the process. I called one body shop and they said they no longer repair wheels because they are unhappy with the results (I guess they contracted it out). They suggest to all their customers to go through their insurance company and get a new wheel. I thought that was pretty extreme, especially in very minor situations
