ever seen this???

25k on the factory tires finally desided to change em out took one off and couldnt believe my eyes. What would cause this? Rear drivers side only one to have

ever seen this???

25k on the factory tires finally desided to change em out took one off and couldnt believe my eyes. What would cause this? Rear drivers side only one to have this weird carved out layer

So I only drive the car in spring summer and fall, what's my best option for tires? I want something a little better than the factory had on, I am thinking bridgestone RE11s
