25k on the factory tires finally desided to change em out took one off and couldnt believe my eyes. What would cause this? Rear drivers side only one to have this weird carved out layer

So I only drive the car in spring summer and fall, what's my best option for tires? I want something a little better than the factory had on, I am thinking bridgestone RE11s

You're SURPRISED??? You got 25k out of the rear tires!!!
1st-cause-camber
2nd-... Do you NEVER look at your tires? Should've seen that around 20-23k miles
3rd-better, in terms of?

EZT 06-26-2013 02:36 AM

Wow, you couldn't believe your eyes?

DarkJak 06-26-2013 03:16 AM

Well the RE-11 won't last 25k miles without doing that either. Probably would wear down to the cables a lot sooner too.

chrischhorn 06-26-2013 03:17 AM

25k and have you ever had an alignment done since? You should be getting an alignment done every 6 months to a year. Especially with how we have some negative camber from factory, it'll minimize the camber wear but you will get it to some extent. And Darkjak is correct, RE11's are a softer compound so they will wear a little faster. But some people get some good wear out of the RE11's but it will likely last you 15k, 20k at best.

Z-Girl 12 06-26-2013 07:55 AM

That is insane!

red2010z 06-26-2013 08:55 AM

I got almost 22 on my car before I replaced em. Don't get Michelin PSS they handle like crap in the rain.

fonzo179 06-26-2013 09:00 AM

That is remarkable, friend. Camber-wear ate right through your rubber. Threads on my stock tires were showing through after 2 cross-country road trips, but nothing like that.

FPenvy 06-26-2013 09:02 AM

i didnt know slicks came stock?!?

my stock rears were bald after about 15k miles no idea how you last over 20K

I've had the exact opposite experience with my PSS tires. Had them on about 6K miles now and they handle great in the rain. Much better than stock and very close to how they handle dry roads.

JARblue 06-26-2013 09:46 AM

I would never let my tires get to that point. IMO you should be paying closer attention to your tires. They are too important to the safe operation of your vehicle for you to let them go like that. :twocents:

m4a1mustang 06-26-2013 10:20 AM

I'm speechless. I can't believe you waited that long to change your tires. Do you not inspect them for wear?

.......obviously not lol

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 10:34 AM

You don't even need to "inspect" anything to know that's not right. A quick glance as you walk by will tell you that tire is shot, and the alignment is way off.

03g35coupe6mt 06-26-2013 10:40 AM

Nice slicks

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 10:41 AM

I'm kind of surprised it still held air.

MARS CLIMATE ORBITER TEAM FINDS LIKELY CAUSE OF LOSS
A failure to recognize and correct an error in a transfer of information between the Mars Climate Orbiter spacecraft team in Colorado and the mission navigation team in California led to the loss of the spacecraft last week, preliminary findings by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory internal peer review indicate.
"People sometimes make errors," said Dr. Edward Weiler, NASA's Associate Administrator for Space Science. "The problem here was not the error, it was the failure of NASA's systems engineering, and the checks and balances in our processes to detect the error. That's why we lost the spacecraft."

The peer review preliminary findings indicate that one team used English units (e.g., inches, feet and pounds) while the other used metric units for a key spacecraft operation. This information was critical to the maneuvers required to place the spacecraft in the proper Mars orbit.

"Our inability to recognize and correct this simple error has had major implications," said Dr. Edward Stone, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "We have underway a thorough investigation to understand this issue."

Two separate review committees have already been formed to investigate the loss of Mars Climate Orbiter: an internal JPL peer group and a special review board of JPL and outside experts. An independent NASA failure review board will be formed shortly.

"Our clear short-term goal is to maximize the likelihood of a successful landing of the Mars Polar Lander on December 3," said Weiler. "The lessons from these reviews will be applied across the board in the future."

Mars Climate Orbiter was one of a series of missions in a long-term program of Mars exploration managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, DC. JPL's industrial partner is Lockheed Martin Astronautics, Denver, CO. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA.

Twice as much as me.......lol. Just over 5k on my set of stockers. A few drag strip meets and a couple autocrosses kind of helped wear them a little fast

I can believe this thread made it to this many before someone brought this up...

Like wtf are you thinking. I would never run my car like that. You are asking for problems. This is just upsetting :ugh2:

boomboom 06-26-2013 05:43 PM

Guys I only drive the car a few miles a week . I knew the tires needed replacing but as of a week ago I never saw the marks on the tire like it has now.

Long story short I have been helping a friend with her divorse and baught her a suv helped with rent lawyer fees ectect..so tires had to wait til now. Like I said I have driven the car only when I had to in the last year so I knew they needed to be replaced, I was surprised to see the weird marks on the 1 tire is why I started this thread.

wheee! 06-26-2013 06:15 PM

Sorry OP, this forum is filled with gearheads that inspect their oil after 2 days of changing it and regularly replace parts that 'hint' of wear.... For someone to not notice their tire is about to detonate and then blame it on being busy and only driving once in a while.... you're in the wrong forum!

It is YOUR responsibility to inspect your vehicle regularly for wear and damage to keep it and you safe! I hope this teaches you something about regular maintenance... no hate, just don't feel sorry for your lack of maintenance....

Chuck33079 06-26-2013 06:18 PM

Not throwing rocks here, but you dodged a bullet. It's a good thing you didn't wad the car up with a tire like that. You were playing blowout roulette. Buy a tire and a tread depth gauge, and consider it a lesson learned.

You mean...the fact you have ZERO tread depth wasn't alarming it was the marks that worried you? Its just a safety thing. Remember you aren't the only one out there on the road is all im saying. All it would take is a little rain and your car would be sliding all over the place with tires like that.

boomboom 06-27-2013 01:19 AM

Kenchan not really sure what thats all about but ya I totally have learned and am still learning lessons. The car has been sitting not really getting my attention yet this year is all im saying. I am very good at keeping the car in shape and making sure its running great and has regular maintenance done but I admitt I know zero about tires, rotors and pads. I will learn from this forum though I promise that.

Its hard to know with so many opinions out there what tires pads and rotors to grab. I am gonna switch everything out I dont like the looks of the stock rotors. Gonna add better lines also. Please let me know if this setup is a good option.

CZP 370Z Brake Kit w/ Centric Posi-Quiet Pads, Akebono Sport Model - Nissan performance parts

I really like what I have read about the RE11 tire so far.

Well you should know that regular maintenance includes tire inspection (pressure, tread depth, and wear). Brakes and tires are two of the most important safety items and should be near the top of your list when it comes to maintenance. I hope you do learn from this forum, as there is a lot of good information to be found :tiphat: Using the information found on this forum along with the service manual which I downloaded from this forum I changed my front rotors and pads and did a brake flush for the first time last week on my own with my own tools in my own garage (I admit I borrowed a motive power bleeder for the brake flush).

I have heard good things about the Posi-Quiet pads for DD and the price is right. Centric rotors are fine and the ATE brake fluid is solid. I like the ATE because I can swap between the SuperBlue and the 200 (which is gold in color) and easily tell when the brakes are bled. Motul has some better options for heavy track duty. You might consider PMing some of the forum sponsors for comparable pricing. Most of the guys you can just tell them the type of driving you want to do and they'll steer you in the right direction (Joe@Zspeed is awesome!).
