Rotational weight reduction...
 
I remember searching a while back and found a thread with base, touring, and nismo wheel sizes and weights with stock tires (and now I can't find it). I'm looking around for some stock nismo wheels and want to make sure they are lighter (including the stock tires) and have better grip than the stock 2013 touring wheels and tires. If I remember correctly the nismo wheels are lighter, a little bit bigger/wider and have better tires from the factory. Sorry in advanced if this should be posted in the wheels and tires section.

I've researched/searched the benefits of a light weight flywheel, lighter weight rotors, and lighter weight wheels/tires but don't have any personal experience. Seems fairly obvious that a light weight flywheel will make a car feel faster. I'm curious if anyone on here has lighter weight wheels and/or rotors and if they actually felt a deference in performance from just a few pounds.

I went from the Base 18's(21lbs for the front, 24.5lbs for the rear) to my Weds Sports TC105n's (17.6lbs for the front, 18.4 lbs for the rear), I could feel a pretty big difference. Acceleration was better and quicker throttle response. Tires were easier to brake loose. They aren't gonna make the most amazing difference but everything helps. Oh yeah and to add on, I went wider from 8" to 9.5" wide in the front and 9" to 10.5" in the rear. A 225/50 to a 255/45 in front and a 245/45 to a 275/40 in the rear so I had more contact patch also and could still feel the difference.

I felt a noticeable difference changing out the Yokohama Advans to Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Advans were rated at 29lbs front and 30lbs rear. PSS were 24lbs front and 27lbs rear.

Throttle response was improved and slightly better acceleration.

This can be calculated... T=I*alpha

It depends on the inertia reduction and the rate at which you accelerate that inertia. Basically, it will have more effect in First gear than it does in 6th gear.

Sounds like a few pounds makes a bigger difference than I thought. Anyone know how much lighter the stock nismo wheels are over the touring wheels?

Thanks, looks like I'll save about 4 pounds a wheel with the stock nismo wheels and tires set up.

Christ... Google it...


The base wheels, that's what they're called, not touring, weigh 21 in the front and 24 and change, almost 25 in the rear.

My mistake... Last I checked the base model and touring model had different wheels. Guess I couldn't google it if I were calling them the wrong thing...

base and touring are the same. sport package has its own rim. nismo has its own rim. there are only 3 rims total now. It use to be verts had it's own model but for 2013 base/touring now also use the vert rims.

Seriously I had no idea how that worked, I wasn't sure if the wheels came with the sports package or from upgrading to the touring model. Learn something new everyday, thanks.

yah, bridgestone tires are notorious for their weight. :ugh2:

Check out the weights for Toyo TS1 (or whatever the comparable tire is now). Very light -- not the grippiest, so that's a compromise, but far lighter than similar quality tires.

I explained this to DEpointfive0 a week ago. Tire weight variance is pretty significant depending on tire and what you are looking for. Some people go lighter wheels to run wider tires gaining the weight they just shaved from lighter wheels.In the end, you can't go everything light. you just need a good compromise of the 2. I saved about 6lbs per corner from wheel weight just to add back about 4lbs per tire for a wider setup. Traction on its own is worth it even if I didn't lose much weight. Just like I'd still rather put a set of RE-11s on even though they are 3 lbs heavier per corner then the P.S.S. but track wise the RE-11's way outperform the super sports. Road wise, the michelins win.

Yeah, he did, it was ridiculous, there was an 8 POUND difference in the 2 tires I was looking at... I almost cried

Manufacturer website.

I usually start looking for recommendations from Grassroots motorsports or peruse tirerack reviews to narrow it down to a list of sticky tires, then I look at price, weight, wear rating (usually lower for stickier tires), wet and dry ratings, etc.
