Powdercoating 3 piece SSR SP3 wheels
Ok guys I tried searching for this but either my key word search was wrong or it hasn't been covered.. Which I find hard to believe... Yes I tried it using just 3 piece wheel too.... Lol So my question is this.. Does anyone have any experience with assembly and re assembly of SSR wheels? Im going to be getting my new set powder coated, and I am guessing I'm going to need to disassemble and resemble myself. So I've seen a lot of articles on different forums saying you should replace the hardware re seal etc etc. So I wanted to know if new hardware is necessary, and if so where I can get it. What kind of sealant to use and where to use it, ie mating service joint etc? Also a torque value would be appreciated as well.
Some people seem to hold the opinion of disassembling only as a last resort, due to it being such a pita and the margin for error. So any experience you can share would be appreciated as well. Basically I would like to know if this is something I can and should take myself to save some money, or is it better left to professionals. I am a naval mechanic by trade so I am mechanically inclined, just concerned about taking apart $3k wheels and not having them go back together lol Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Mike should be able to more accurately answer your question, but I do know it will require a new sealant on the wheel since it is a 3-piece. My Volks were a 2-piece and much simpler to reassemble.

I have no experience with SSR Wheels, but I did coat the three piece OZ Wheels I had on my corvette.
The two halves of the rim were sealed together at assembly with some type of sealant, and I was unable to separate the halves, so I coated them together. Just to be safe, I ran a layer of silicone sealant over the original sealant afterwards, but I think that was overkill. As for the bolts, you should be fine reusing those.

Realistically I should only.need to remove the face correct? The only reason I would be disassembling would be to facilitate the powder coating. I may only be coming the face anyhow I haven't decided. I know I want the faces to be like the blue on.my old strasse wheels I had ( bullits old wheels)

SSR SP3s faces are top mounted. You can pull the face out without having to disassemble the barrels. However, the barrels are welded together as a safety precaution(strength and to prevent leaking) once everything is bolted together and then the silicone is applied.
They don't sell the hardware separately and the hardware is a pretty unique size, so be careful taking them apart. SSR doesn't recommend taking the wheels apart because again, this is a safety concern. They wouldn't want anything to happen as a result of them being re-assembled incorrectly. SSR does offer some different colors that they can do for you when the wheel is being ordered. |

Just get them professionally taken apart, painted, then reassembled. If you only take off the face and paint, let us know how it goes. |

Just thinking out loud so to speak, but can you just buy the powder color you want and send it with the wheels?

Are you referring to sending the powder coating to SSR in Japan? Or whoever I have do the wheels? My main issue is finding a shop locally that will disassemble powder coat and then resemble without having to go to a different shop for each step of the process. I really don't want to have to pay shipping both ways hence wanting to stay local... Seattle / Puget sound people have any suggestions?

If they are top mounted centers and you are just doing the centers you won't have any problem at all. Even if the fasteners are unique, and you do need to replace them, You can find replacements. I had to order a special tool and new rim screws from a specialty place in Germany for my OZ wheels.

Thanks Mike.. So when I re-seal these will it be on the mating surface with some permatex or ultra blue type sealant? Or should I use a silicone based sealant?
