Yes, in lower temperatures you will get this. When at or near full lock and the temperatures are low, the inside wheel will skip a little on the pavement because it is not pointing in the exact same direction as the other wheel. It binds slightly and then breaks traction.

Clunking Noise when making sharp turn
Hey folks,
Well, I'm back with yet another issue.... Just recently, since it has gotten really cold here, I have noticed a severe clunking noise on the driver side front end whenever I make sharp turns. It's best described as if the tire was hitting something and causing something else to "skip". Only problem is...the tire isn't hitting anything. I've taken it to the dealer and can't seem to recreate it as this seems to only happen when the car is cold...i.e., when I'm leaving for work in the AM or leaving work to come home. By the time I drive to the dealer, the car is warm and the noise is no where to be found. The clunking is so bad that it actually shakes the car. I have a 2009 Touring Sport. Any suggestions? Does anyone know of a TSB for this? Last edited by jloomis13; 12-14-2010 at 01:53 PM. Reason: Forgot to tell which vehicle I have! |

Summer tires will bind and skip at near full lock when cold. Do a search, you will see it happens to a lot of people. The Summer compound tires aren't designed to be driven below 40 degrees.
Ideally you should have all-season tires on the car for driving through the Winter, or snow tires if you live in the snow belt.

Good to know...I've noticed that too when pulling away from a parallel-parked spot.

This same thing has been occuring to me with the front end shaking like i hit potholes, makes sence what everyone is saying but im taking it to the dealer this week for a oil change and to have it checked out anyways. Funny thing coming from a 350z this problem never occured even in extreme cold with the stock potenzas.

I've had it happen a couple times here in San Diego, once it gets below ~50*F at night, kinda awkward, thought it was suspension bind but it's not.

I have had the exact same problem! In fact my car is at the dealership right now getting inspected for this issue. They can't seem to figure it out...Is this noise normal in cold weather?

With summer tires in cold weather you will experience a binding noise during tight turns. The tires are so hard when cold that they will skip over the pavement when you are making a tight turn in/out of a driveway or parking space.

This weird noise and tires slipping on the black top wile in full lock and backing up or turning i think is every bodies differential fluid is too hard as in frozen in the winter or weight is too high as in gear oil. You can add a softer for this to be minimized. All this is that fluid is too cold and it does not sink in to the LSD plates right away, remember those who have a sport package has the Vicious LSD 2.0
and they depend on fluid in order to operate properly so all this is absolutely normal. I do not know about the base models tho, research it if u want.

problems with sharp turns
So when i turn the wheel hard to say turn into or out of a parking spot i noticed the car is very ruff. Its like a ratcheting almost its not smooth at all in the front end. I Have a 2009 with 7000 miles on it. Im not sure if its supposed to do that when i turn the wheel all the way to the right or left but it sure does not feel right? Anyone have the same problem, or advise?
