Why not winter tires on the stock 19" rims??
 

Guys - I have a 2011 base coupe with the sport package. Why not just change the stock summer 19 inch Potenzas out for an all season tire or winter tire of the same size?? I'm trying to save the money/hassle of buying new winter wheels that may or may not fit. I live in CT and snow is coming probably sooner than I like.

I know the prevailing wisdom is to change out the 19's for 18's with a narrower tire but will it really make that much difference??

The main reasoning for not putting a winter tire on the Z is because unless you stretch it very very much, on a 10" w/ wheel. Narrower tires does help a lot, especially if RWD.

Also, the stock 19" size will cost you a butt load. Plus the cost of swapping the tires back and forth on your wheels.
I paid $1100 for wheels and snow tires. 18" 225/50, which will track a whole lot better than the wider tires.

Thanks for the reply Tibal. What I'm saying is to just replace the stock tires with winter tires of the exact same size (245/40's front and 275/35's rear)?? Those will fit the stock rims I can assume.

I may just go with my original plan at this point - cheap 18 inch wheels and 225/50's. I am open to other opinions too.

2010Z w/ sport. Second winter on the 19's with Blizzaks. No issues at all. I bought a second set of used Rays sport rims for winter.

That would work but if you want the best traction while safely driving a RWD car in the snow thinner is better. (Only case) :bowrofl:

I look at it this way, think of snow shoes, with a wider snow shoe, you can walk on the snow with ease. Wide tires and snow, same principle. somewhat.. lol

That would work definitely, but keep those wheels fresh and just get a winter set :)

I just got my 2011 touring/sport a few months back (love it!). I just put Blizzaks on my stock 19s last week. So far in the small amount of snow we have received in MN the tires have been amazing. My plan is to get all new wheels/tires (20s most likely)before spring and keep the stock rims as my dedicated "winters".
