Discount Tire Direct broke my keyed lug nut
So yeah, they broke it when putting my wheel back on after replacing my tires. It was on my rear driver side - though that isn't pertinent.
The threaded metal portion is still there along with some remnants of plastic around it. My wheels are painted black so I'm concerned about them getting all jacked up. Anyway, any suggestions on how to get it off? Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks. |

Are they not taking care of that for you/replacing it? I mean isn't that what they should be doing??

If they do jack up my rims, they'll be paying for it one way or another. Normally, is it kosher to use an air gun on keyed lugs? Like any other lug nuts, I'm sure they have an optimal torque setting, but I they think just were being lazy. |

As for the removal of it, I'm not really sure how they will... Do you have any pics of it? I would recommend taking some of the wheel before they do it so if in the event they do scratch it they can't pull the whole "oh it was already there" defense.

Do you have the correct locking lugs? If you have the wrong locks then it wasn't their fault, it was going to break no matter what.
Check this thread to make sure. Broken wheel stud and lug nut.

you can remove locking lugs with an air gun, but you usually dont put them on with one. In fact, when any GOOD shop is putting on nice wheels, they dont even use the airgun to put on any of the lug nuts.

Yeah, whoops, I meant impact gun. I remember a long time ago having someone use an impact gun when putting on some rims on my previous cars and when I tried to take them off, I about had an aneurism. I actually sat and watched the entire time on this one and was waiting to tell them if they attempted to use an impact gun when putting them back on. They were real quick about it and before I could run out there, it was on and broken. I don't plan on ever going to one of these types of shops again.

Yes, dealers have been putting these on new cars. Sadly they don't read the tech bulletins. You're dealer is now responsible for the repair.

How does this TSB tie into aftermarket wheels? I just got some Avant Garde wheels, the Nissan lug nuts did not fit so they used new ones. No idea what brand or what. What should I look for to know if I have the wrong lug nuts for my car?

The TSB is for stock wheels only. For aftermarket wheels you need to check the depth of the lugs (and locks if you have them) to make sure that the stud doesn't bottom out in the lug. Typically it is not a problem for after market wheels as the hub of the wheel is a little thicker. The stock lugs were actually a little too short for the Forgestars so I installed longer studs.
