Black Center Caps for Nismo Rims

Hello all,

I just had my Nismo rims powder coated matte black and then I spray painted the chrome center caps black. However I don't think the matte black spray paint will hold on the center caps (already chipped the paint). Does anyone know if Nissan makes black Nismo center caps or some other method of permanently coloring the center caps so they wont chip?

Have them powdercoated or professionally painted with clearcoat for strength.

The Nismo wheels are only available in Silver

Yah, did you primer the caps prior to painting? If so id consult with Mike the powder coater.

I had my Nismo rims professionally powder coated black. Also since there plastic, they cannot be powder coated being that the bonding process involves baking the wheels in an oven. It would melt the center caps.

I did not use primer. The paint I bought said that primer wasn't need. Maybe I should redo them. Who is mike the powder coater?

yah, primer is a good thing to use on metals regardless of what it says. make sure you wipe it down real well with rubbing alcohol or equivalent to rid all oils and wax.

Thanks for your insight. I'm going get some primer and then reapply the spray paint. I plan to use paint thinner to remove the existing paint from the center caps. Do you think the paint thinner will do any harm to the plastic center caps?

im not sure if it would damage the finish or not.... but even if it did, just primer and repaint.

i thought those center caps were metal..

first off.. sand them. scuff them with whatever sand paper you have.. then shoot them with a spray paint especially for plastic.

nope, plastic. AND, they start to melt at around 225 degrees farenheit. I had mine painted by my body shop.

btw, so do our engine covers

Honda CRZ center caps don't melt til 275,

Corvette engine covers and center caps can handle 375+, enough to powdercoat them.

So I went to Autozone last night and got the sand paper, primer and flat black paint for plastic. I sanded the old paint off and then hit the center caps with 3 coats of primer and 2 coats of the flat black paint. The results were spot on! I'm going to hit them with an additional coat of flat black again tonight for good measure.
