Finally Decided on Wheels/Tires

I decided on Axis Angles. 20X10 Rear and 20X9 Front. I went with Matte Silver, because it was in stock and I can always powder coat later if I want the Matte Black. This will be my fourth set of Axis wheels and I have come to expect outstanding value from them. These are some of the best priced wheels out there, they are light weight (especially for the size), good looking and will last. Mounted pics will probably come some time next week.:eekdance:

For the tires I chose something that I'm sure quite a few of you will flame me for. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus.

http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires...plus_ci2_l.jpg

I'm running 255/35/ZR20 Front and 285/30/ZR20 Rear.
The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus isn't a summer tire, and it's not the most high performance tire out there. It is, however, a light weight tire, with excellent grip and UNSURPASSED tread life. I've got 10k miles and my Advans are toast. I don't expect to change these tires nearly as often, in fact they should last almost 3 times as long. The increased width should more than compensate for the lesser grip, especially when compared to the relatively narrow 245 that I have on the rear now.

theDreamer 04-08-2009 09:45 AM

Cannot wait for pictures, I was looking at these but not really sure.

ChrisSlicks 04-08-2009 10:31 AM

20's wow, that's pretty pimpin'.

Given the added width I think you will have more grip than you had before even though these tires aren't the stickiest. They are really low profile though so you'll probably feel the bumps a lot more.

Are you going to use these as your auto-x tire or are you doing something different for that?

SoCal 370Z 04-08-2009 10:33 AM

JoeyD,

I am happy you found your choice of rims! I love the Rays, but when more 370s hit the road they will start to look commonplace. Looking forward to some pics!

As of right now, I haven't completely made up my mind. I'm leaning toward running Hoosiers on the stock 18's. I think the added grip will make up for the lack of a Limited Slip. Later on down the road (like when I scrape together enough money for lots of mods) I'm going to step out of B Stock and in to Street Touring Ultra. I think I may go with an AP Racing brake setup so I can still continue to use the stock 18's. It's all up in the air right now, until I can get some slicks on the 18's the 20's will be my autocross wheel.

Thanks Jim, and again thanks for all the help along the way. Ultimately, price and some measure of uniqueness made up my mind. I agree that over time the stockers will begin to look commonplace.

Good choice JoeyD!

Actually as an all around tire I think they are a perfect choice. Outstanding wet performance and very predictable solid dry performance. You should get some decent mileage out of them too as long as you don't auto-x them for too long.

RCZ 04-08-2009 12:54 PM

Cool cool. I'm eager to see what you do as far as offset goes. I still don't know what is going to look flush on the Z.

Canadian370Z 04-08-2009 01:54 PM

They had a small picture on the AXIS front page of a 370Z.

JoeyD 04-08-2009 03:16 PM

Yeah that pic has been up before. Funny thing that the wheels on this car are only on the passenger side. They only had one of each wheel at the time.

Canadian370Z 04-08-2009 03:48 PM

Looking forward to some pics since I have the same color as you.

AK370Z 04-08-2009 05:31 PM

Congrats! I think they'll look awesome! Don't forget to share some pictures with us. :pics:

Minicobra1 04-08-2009 08:25 PM

Nice choice, I wish they made 19's, I don't want to go with 20's. Plus I want a 10.5 to 11 rear wheel, a 305/30/19 would fit nicely on that width.

Looking forward to pics thought.

tvfreakazoid 04-12-2009 04:52 PM

Personally I think it's over kill for 20's on a Z.

JoeyD 04-13-2009 10:03 AM

A Little Teaser...

Wheels are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. For now...

As for 20's being overkill. I thought that too for a time. However, spend some time really looking at the size of the wheel wells and you will probably change your mind. My number 1 concern at the outset of my wheels selection was weight as this is the single most important performance characteristic of a wheel. These particular wheels are the best compromise between weight, style and cost (completely subjective I know). I love the absence of a lip. It looks almost OEM.

tvfreakazoid 04-14-2009 03:50 AM

How much are the wheels and tires going to cost you?

I've got about 2750.00 in them including shipping, mounting and balancing. Just waiting on the UPS man.

RCZ 04-14-2009 04:56 PM

going to mount today?

AK370Z 04-14-2009 05:27 PM

Awesome JoeyD, can't wait to see the pictures :happydance: (<--- new smiley btw)

JoeyD 04-14-2009 05:46 PM

UPS dropped the ball...tracking system says tomorrow. I like the new smiley

JoeyD 04-15-2009 05:22 PM

Wheels showed up today. Unfortunately the box with the lugs and rings went to Albuquerque NM instead of Raeford, NC. I know, they sound so much alike. I could go out and buy new lugs, but I don't feel like wasting another $30-40. So I'll just wait.

HAHA My lugs took a wrong turn in Albuquerque.

CrownR426 04-15-2009 08:01 PM

LMAO WTH?!
Damn bro your car is going to look so sweeeet!
Cannot wait sir!

JoeyD 04-16-2009 04:52 PM

Wheels installed today. I'm very happy!

Fair warning for future rim buyers. The TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) can not be disabled. So you have three choices; buy a TPMS compatible wheel, deal with the light, or pull the bulb. I'll be pulling the bulb as soon as I have an afternoon to take my dash apart.

Pics tomorrow.

DJcuetip 04-16-2009 06:41 PM

can ya do a DIY for pulling it out please?!

370z2 04-16-2009 08:35 PM

Why is everyone putting AXIS rims on a 370z! I mean I know the Z is no ferrari, but damn it is a true sports car. Putting AXIS rims on is a huge downgrade. If I see a Z or an M3 or any car at that level with AXIS rims on, it makes me think "what a waste".

mcheddadi 04-16-2009 10:14 PM

it's because people buy what they find attractive.
respect the man's choice, don't ruin his fun

DJcuetip 04-16-2009 10:58 PM

because everyone and there mother have wheels with a chrome lip.. and when i saw these in matte black in person.. i fell in love with them.. im not hating on chrome lips.. i personally have a supra with 19x12 gunmetal 57pro with chrome.. but axis did a great job creating this concave rim... its something different.. instead of being like every other car out there with aftermarket rims

You strike me as the type that thinks price is the only measure of quality. You could of easily been one of the poor souls who bought the bad HRE wheels way back when they had problems with wheels spinning inside tires. This is my fourth set of AXIS wheels. I have never had a complaint about the quality, weight, performance, or price. That being said, the Angles are my favorite set so far. The OEM-ish design has garnered nothing but compliments both today and yesterday. So, hate if you want and enjoy your played out deep dish wheels. I'll be enjoying my unique (at least for now) concave full spoke design.

Uploading and resizing pics right now...

Yeah I will, if I go that route. I was looking closer today and to be honest it would be so easy to just black out the TPMS light. I may just do that.

sorry for the small size. I'm a little rushed, and unfamiliar with this OS (mac). I'll re-do it on Monday with appropriate sized pics.

^ Nah, these wheels are made for this car.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm really enjoying these wheels.
