My New TE37's / Thanks Phelan!
If any of you remember a thread a while back I was looking at some Volk TE37 on Craiglist but was unsure if they were real, or how I was going to get them to Canada.
Volk TE37 all real? Phelan was awesome enough to offer to go check the wheels out, and verified their weight and the condition. Problem at this point was that the seller was going to be away for an extended time and had left the wheels with his sister and cousin who knew nothing about shipping. I approached Phelan about the possibility of brokering the deal for me, which I know is a huge thing to ask, and a huge risk on my part. With the reputation Phelan has built for himself on this forum I felt I could trust him, and I appreciated him even considering to help me because I know it's a pain in the *** to be responsible for shipping wheels. Long story short, Phelan was amazing, picked the wheels up and had them to me a couple of weeks later. I cannot express how much I appreciate him going through with this for me. I did compensate him financially but it was very minor considering all the work he did for me. I know many people were critical in the other thread about my buying used wheels and why didn't I just buy new ones so I did a quick breakdown and here is how much I saved... Brand New 4 19" TE37 Matte Black (This is the best of the quotese I received to Canada) Wheels - $3700 Shipping - $300 HST Tax - $550 Customs - $1100 Total: $5650 I Paid Wheels - $2300 Shipping - $500 (Cost higher due to 2 added tires) Taxes - $150 Customs - $50 Paypal Fees - $300 (I was an idiot and put goods instead of gift) Total - $3300 + I got 2 Brand new Tires (Phelans cost was negligible) My total savings were about $2300 and 2 brand new tires, the wheels are in mint condition. I'm really glad to have them here and will post pics once they're mounted in the spring. Phelan, you rock! Last edited by Jjaden; 12-18-2010 at 08:27 PM. |

How come such a big difference in tax/HST and customs? I don't understand why customs fees would cost you $1100 on a brand new set.
Also, cudos to Phelan...way to help out a fellow member!

Customs fees are generally in the range of 25-30% on new products. Again since the wheels were listed as used and only $1000, I was charged only a fraction on the cost. As you know Canadians are totally raped any time we buy something across the border and bring/ship in into Canada. I refuse to pay an additional 40% (Tax+Customs) based solely on what side of the border I live on. Phelan was a champ on this one, and helped to save me literally thousands of dollars. |
